SNMP Data Collection and Polling Guide

This document discusses how NNM can monitor SNMP MIB object values from managed nodes using data collection and thresholds. It describes how to configure data collection by adding new MIB objects and expressions to collect, and polling intervals. It also explains how baseline data is collected to calculate standard deviations for setting threshold values to trigger events.

Data Collection Overview
 NNM can monitor MIB object value of any managed
mode (with SNMP)
 Polling intervals for monitored values can be
customized
 Polled values can be stored on the management
station
 Polled values can trigger events at specified
thresholds
 Data stored in files under
\install_dir\databases\snmpCollect – should be
monitored and trimmed using ovdwtrend command
 Invoked from Options  Data Collection and
Thresholds:SNMP

Adding a MIB Object for Collection

 Options  Data Collection &

Thresholds:SNMP
 Edit: MIB Object  New
 Choose the MIB Object and specify
Label – click OK

Creating a MIB Expression

 An expression created from MIB objects

allow you to look at relationships
between objects or interpret values
 MIB expressions are defined in
\install_dir\conf\[Link]
 To have new expressions available,
stop and restart the data collector
configuration GUI

Collecting Baseline data

1. snmpcollect gathers baseline data

2. Data is automatically exported to Data
warehouse
3. data warehouse counts the data points and
provides info for collecting standard
deviation –
install_dir\snmpCollect\[Link]
4. snmpcollect calculates standard deviation
from this information
5. You can then set thresholds based on
standard deviation
