Smart Traffic Light System Overview

Sekolah Menengah Sains Pokok Sena, Kedah proposes the STAR Light system, a smart traffic light that manipulates time based on the number of cars. The system uses light sensors to detect vehicles and sets shorter wait times when there are fewer cars. This aims to reduce traffic delays compared to normal lights with fixed timing. The objectives are to study time manipulation in traffic lights and develop a system adjusting time proportionally to vehicle amounts. Surveys, research, and discussions were used to analyze current systems and design an effective proposal using logic gates and sensors.

STAR Light System

What is STAR Light
An acronym for Smart Traffic Light
It focuses on time manipulation
This means it sets time based on the
number of cars behind a traffic cars
The lesser the cars (until it reaches
minimum) the shorter the time
This system is regulated by light sensors
How it works…
If there are few cars

If there are more cars

The problems with normal traffic
light
It has a fixed time setting. Therefore:
b. it causes delays
c. The time interval is impractical
d. Traffic will become inefficient

HYPOTHESIS
Delays behind traffic light could be reduced if
the timer in a traffic light could be manipulated
proportional to the amount of vehicles behind
the traffic light.
Objectives
To increase knowledge in the field of physics
especially areas involving time manipulation in a
traffic light
To develop a system which comply to our means
and objectives to manipulate time in a traffic light
proportional to the amount of vehicles behind
the traffic light
To enhance knowledge in fields involving risk
assessment and probabilities as well as
challenges the mind to come up with creative
solutions
Methodology
Carry out a survey to obtain feedback from pedestrians
as well as drivers
Comparing and contrasting the current traffic system
with our STAR Light system
Gather information and data needed by referring pages
from the internet, reference books, magazines and visit
to the library.
We discussed it’s outcome with various experienced
teachers in fields of physics and mathematic teachers to
cover all possible outcomes and probabilities
Have discussions and assessment with fellow
participants as well as with our advisor
Benefits
to develop an effective system to
manipulate time proportional to the
amount of cars
Minimize the time behind the traffic light
To avoid delays behind the traffic lights
and decrease the amount of traffic jams
To enhance the technology regarding
traffic light to an advance level
Enhancement
Proposal:
 a circuit which based on logic gates such
as the usage of IC 5703 (AND gate), IC
5786 (X-OR gate) and IC 4017 (decade
counter)
 To increase accuracy and efficiency in
terms of time
