Rizal's Student Demonstration in Madrid

Rizal secretly departed for Spain in 1882 to observe European cultures and prepare to liberate the Filipino people from Spanish tyranny. During his voyages to Spain, he witnessed sights in Singapore, Sri Lanka, and cities in Italy and Spain. In Madrid, he studied medicine, philosophy, languages, and arts. He also romanced Consuelo Ortigay Perez but ended it to remain faithful to his fiancee and to not hurt his friend Eduardo de Lete, who loved Consuelo. Rizal completed his medical and philosophy studies in Spain, earning degrees, but did not receive his medical doctorate. He experienced financial struggles as support from home was delayed or did not arrive.

VOYAGES OF RIZAL

May 3,1882 Rizal boarding SALAVADORA bound for Singapore. May 9, it docked at Singapore He saw the famous Botanical Garden,Buddist Temples, an The Statue of Sir Thomas Stanford Raffles (founder of Singapore. From Singapore he transferred to another ship DJEMNAH, which left Singapore for Europe on May 11. On May17, the DJEMNAH reached Point Galle, a seacoast town in southern Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). On his Travel diary he wrote: The general appearance of Point Galle is picturesque but lonely and quiet and at the same time sad. He took 5 days to Suez Canal.

VOYAGES OF RIZAL

June 11 Rizal reached Naples, Italian City. June 12 reached Marseilles. June 16, 1882 reached Barcelona, his first impression was unfavorable. While he was in Barcelona, he wrote AMOR PATRIO (Love of Country) using his Pen name Laong Laan. While sojourning in Barcelona he received sad news. Cholera was ravaging Manila and Provinces. Leonor Rivera was getting thinner because of his absence.

On November 3 Rizal enrolled i the Universidad Central de Madrid (Central University of Madrid) in two courses: Medicine Philosophy and Letters He also studied painting and sculpture in the Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando; took lessons in French, German, and English under private instructors; and assiduously practiced fencing and shooting in the Hall of Arms of Sanz y Carbonell.

ROMANCE WITH CONSUELO ORTIGA Y PEREZ

He was attracted by Consuelos beauty and vivacity. He even composed a lovely poem dedicated to her: A LA SENORA C. O. y P. ( To miss C. O. Y p.) RIZALS FIRST VISIT TO PARIS

At first he was billeted at the Hotel de Paris and later moved to Latin Quarter where it was cheaper to live. Rizal was charmingly tiltilated by the attractive sights of Paris. Rizal was mistaken by the Parisians as a Japanese. He also said that Paris is the coolest capital of Europe.

RIZAL AS A MASON

March 1883 Rizal joined the Masonic lodge called ACASIA in Madrid. His reason for becoming a mason was to secure Freemasonrys aid in his fight against the friars in the Philippines. Later he transferred to LODGE SOLEDARIDAD (Madrid) where he became Master Mason on Nov. 15,1890. On Feb. 15, 1892 he was awarded the diploma as Master mason by Le Grand Orient de France In Paris. His only Masonic writing was SCIENCE,VIRTUE AND LABOR which he delivered in 1889 at Lodge Solidaridad, Madrid.

FINANCIAL WORRIES

The harvests of rice and sugarcane failed on account of drought and locusts. The Dominican-owned hacienda increased the rentals of the lands cultivated by Rizals family. Dreadful pest killed most of the turkeys who was Rizals father business. Due to hard times in Calamba, the monthly allowances of Rizal in Madrid were late in arrival and there were times when they never arrived, causing much suffering to him.

FINANCIAL WORRIES

At one time Paciano was forced to sell his younger brothers pony in order to send money in Madrid. A touching incident in Rizals life i Madrid occurred on June 24, 1884: He was unable to take breakfast that day. With an empty stomach, he attended his class at the university, participated in a contest in Greek language and won the gold medal. In the evening of the same day, he was able to eat dinner, for he was guest speaker in a banquet held in honor of Juan Luna and Felix Resurrection Hidalgo at restaurant ingles, Madrid.

RIZALS SALUTE TO LUNA AND HIDALGO

Lunas Spolarium won 1st price and Hidalgos Christians Virgins Exposed To The Populace won 2nd price in the National Exposition in Fine Arts in Madrid.

He saluted Luna and Hidalgo as the two glories of Spain and the Philippines, whose artistic achievements transcended geographical frontiers and racial origins, for genius is universal. genius knows no country, genius sprouts everywhere, genius is like light, air, the patrimony of everybody, cosmopolitan like space, like life, like God.

RIZAL INVOLVED IN STUDENT DEMONSTRATIONS

On Nov.20-22 1884, the serene city of Madrid exploded in bloody riots by the students of Central University. Angered by the bigotry of the Catholic bishops, the university students rose in violent demonstrations. They rioted in the city streets, shouting: Viva Morayta!!!!!Down with Bishops!! The Rector, who also took the side of the students, was forced to resign and eas replaced dy Doctor Creus, a very unpopular man disliked by everybody.

STUDIES COMPLETED IN SPAIN

Rizal completed his medical course in Spain. He was conferred the degree of Licentiate in Medicine by the Universidad Central de Madrid on June 21,1884. The next academic year 1884-1885 he studied and passed all subjects leading to the Degree of Medicine. Due to the fact, however, that he did not present the thesis required for graduation nor paid the corresponding fees, he was not awarded his Doctors diploma.

STUDIES COMPLETED IN SPAIN

Rizal also finished his studies in Philosophy and Letters with higher grades. He was awarded the Degree of Licentiate in Philosophy and Letters by the Universidad Central de Madrid on June 19,1885 (his 24th birthday) with the rating of Excellent (Sobresaliente). At long last, he became qualified to become a professor of Humanities in any Spanish university. And by receiving his degree of Licentiate in Medicine, he became full-pledged physician, qualified to practice Medicine.
