Drug Name: Methergine (methylergonovine maleate) is a semi-synthetic ergot alkaloid used for the prevention and control of postpartum
hemorrhage. Drug Classification: PC: Ergot Alkaloid and Derivative Indication: For routine management after delivery of the placenta; postpartum atony and hemorrhage; subinvolution. Under full obstetric supervision, it may be given in the second stage of labor following delivery of the anterior shoulder. Mechanism of Action: Methergine Stimulates uterine smooth muscles producing sustained contractions thereby shortens the third stage of labor Adverse Reaction Hyper- orhypotension,nausea, vomiting,chest pain,dyspnea,headache, hematuria,thrombophlebitis,waterintoxication,hallucinations,leg cramps,dizziness,tinnitus,nasal congestion,diarrhea,diaphoresis,palpitations, foul taste. I.V. use may induce sudden hypertension and cerebrovascular accidents. As a last resort, give I.V. slowly over several minutes and monitor blood pressure closely.
