Kidney Pathology Overview

The document provides descriptions and diagnoses of specimens from the urinary and male genital systems, including: - A kidney with chronic diffuse glomerulonephritis and end-stage kidney disease, showing a reduced and granular outer surface. - Two kidneys with benign nephrosclerosis and end-stage kidney disease, reduced in size with prominent thick-walled arteries. - A kidney with healed renal infarcts and focal embolic glomerulonephritis, showing pale grey pyramidal infarct zones. - An enlarged kidney with tuberculosis, showing multiple yellow caseous foci and cavities lined with caseous material.

Urinary & Male Genital System

Diagnosis Comment
U 3-2 Specimen :
Bisected kidney
 Chronic diffuse Description :
glomerulonephritis [end stage  The kidney is markedly reduced in size
kidney]  Granular outer surface
 Cut section shows reduced cortex which is indistinct from
medulla with increase in the peripelvic fat
 Scattered thick walled small arteries are seen
U 15-1 Specimen :
Two bisected kidneys
 Benign nephrosclerosis Description :
[arteriolosclerotic kidney] ;  Both kidneys are reduced in size with finely granular outer
end stage kidney surface showing scattered small cysts
 The cut section shows reduced cortex indistinct from medulla
with prominent thick-walled arteries
 The peripelvic fat is increased
U 18-4 Specimen :
Bisected kidney
 Healed renal infarcts Description :
 Focal embolic  The outer surface shows multiple depressions representing the
glomerulonephritis bases of infarcts
 The cut section shows the infarcts as pale grey pyramidal zones
with dark margins & depressed base

U 27-1 Specimen :
Bisected kidney
 Tuberculosis of the kidney Description :
 The kidney is enlarged
 The outer surface shows multiple yellow caseous foci
 The cut section shows multiple scattered irregular cavities, lined
by yellow caseous material

U 32-3 Specimen :
Half of the kidney
 Renal cell carcinoma Description :
[hypernephroma]  The kidney is enlarged
 Cut section shows large oval mass, 15 cm in length arising from
the lower pole of the kidney
 The mass is non capsulated but well defined with a yellowish
grey cut surface showing areas of necrosis & hemorrhage
 The rest of the kidney is compressed at the opposite pole &
appears crescentic

U 34-13 Specimen :
Half of a kidney & part of an adult heart
 Congenital polycystic kidney Description :
 Hypertrophy of left ventricle  The kidney is markedly enlarged
 The surface & the cut section of the kidney show large numbers
of variable-sized bluish cysts
 The cysts are thin walled
 The renal tissue in between is atrophic
 The heart shows hypertrophy of the left ventricle
U 38-5 Specimen :
Part of the urinary bladder
 Bilharzial cystitis with sandy Description :
patches The mucosa of the posterior wall shows dirty yellow granular
patches [sandy patches]
U 39-2 Specimen :
Distal part of the ureters, bladder & prostate
 Bilharzial cystitis [sandy Description :
patches + polyps]  The bladder mucosa shows 3 small polyps projecting in the
 Dilated bladder & bilateral bladder lumen,
hydroureter  They are grey with brownish spots on their surfaces,
 They are located at the trigone
 The rest of bladder mucosa shows dirty yellow granular patches
[sandy patches]
 The bladder wall is hypertrophied, dilated with trabeculations
 Distal ends of the ureters are dilated
U 40-27 Specimen :
Half of the kidney with the upper part of the ureter
 Chronic pyelonephritis Description :
 Staghorn stones  The outer surface of the kidney shows multiple irregular
depressions
 The cut surface shows reduced fibrosed cortex indistinct from
the medulla
 The pelvicalyceal system is dilated & contains a large pale brown
staghorn stone
U 44-5 Specimen :
Open kidney with upper part of the ureter
 Fibrous stricture of the ureter Description :
 Hydroureter & marked  The lower part of the ureter shows a fibrous stricture, 5cm in
hydronephrosis length
 The ureter above the stricture is markedly dilated
 The pelvis & calyces are markedly dilated
 The renal parenchyma is almost totally atrophic

 The open tunica vaginalis is markedly distended & shows fibrous
thickening
 The testis is small & atrophic
U 75-2 Specimen :
