Taxonomic Survey of Campus Macrofungi

This document summarizes a taxonomic survey of macroscopic fungi conducted at Polytechnic University of the Philippines' main campus. The study identified 39 species of macrofungi across two phyla. Most species belonged to the order Agaricales, which includes mushrooms and toadstools. The fungi were collected from five stations on campus and identified based on morphological characteristics. Environmental factors like temperature and humidity were also observed.

Taxonomic Survey of Macroscopic Fungi in

Polytechnic University of the Philippines Main Campus, Sta. Mesa, Manila

Abracia, Mary Grace and Jusay, Jamila G.

Abstract

Macrofungi are known to be the main decomposers of decaying woods.

They are dependent on the nutrients that they acquired from their substrate. This
study presents the different macrofungi that can be found within the vicinity of
PUP main campus.
In order to facilitate the collection of macrofungi, the study site was divided
into five (5) stations and opportunistic sampling was done in collecting the
different macrofungi. Morphological structures such as cap shape and surface,
gill attachment, cap and gill margin, gills spacing, stipe shape and surface and
presence or absence of ring and volva were the basis for identification and
classification collected specimens. Environmental factors such as temperature,
humidity and soil pH was also observed.
There were 39 species of macrofungi collected which were distributed into
Phylum Basidiomycota with five (5) families, 22 genera and 41 species while
Phylum Ascomycota with one (1) family and one (1) genus. It was found out that
Order Agaricales (68%) has the most number of species followed by
Auriculariales (14%), Polyporales (18%), Dacrymycetales (3%), Xyliarales (3%)
and Tremellales (5%).
