Equivalent Spring Calculations

The document describes calculating a single equivalent spring constant to model a multi-spring one degree of freedom system. It shows the steps of combining springs in parallel and series to obtain an overall equivalent spring constant (keq). The steps are: 1) combine parallel springs, 2) combine springs in series, 3) combine remaining parallel springs, and 4) combine final springs in series to obtain keq.

Calculate a single spring equivalent to

model one degree freedom system
k1 k1

k4
k2

k3 k3

k5

Solution:

Step 1.

ke1

k4
k2

ke2

k5

ke1 : parallel configuration of k1 and k1.

ke2 : parallel configuration of k3 and k3.

1
Step 2 :

ke3 k4

k5

ke3 : configuration series ke1 , k2 and ke2.

Step 3 :

ke4

k5

ke4 : parallel configuration of ke3 and k4.

Step 4 :

keq

Finally keq can be found by by series configuration of ke4 and k5.

Foolowing the procedures:

Step 1 :
ke1 = k1 +k1 = 2k1
ke2 = k3 +k3 = 2k3
Step 2 :
