Seminar Topic
An overview of design of Steel structures using AISC codes facilitating a comparison with
IS codes
Abstract
Structural steel is one of the basic materials used by structural engineers. Steel, as a
structural material has exceptional strength, stiffness, and ductility properties. As a result of
these properties, steel is readily produced in an extensive variety of structural shapes to
satisfy a wide range of application needs. The wide spread use of structural steel makes it
necessary for structural engineers to be well versed in its properties and uses.
The structural steel industry in the United States is represented principally by the American
Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). AISC works tirelessly to advance the science and art
associated with producing, designing, fabricating, and erecting structural steel. One of their
many available resources is the AISC Steel Construction Manual (SCM). AISC SCM is based on
“AISC Specification for Structural Steel Buildings” which, from the perspective of American
steel industry is the heart and soul of steel design. In addition to “AISC Specification for
Structural Steel Buildings” & its design aids, AISC SCM also includes Dimensions & properties
of structural steel sections, general considerations, Code of Standard Practice for Steel
Buildings and Bridges & RCSC Specification for Structural Joints Using ASTM A325 or A490
Bolts.
In India structural steel design for general buildings are done according to the provisions of
“Indian standard code of practice for general construction in steel (IS800)”.
The scope of this seminar is to have an insight into the design philosophy adopted by AISC,
an overview of the design of steel structures & connections using AISC Provisions and to
compare it with Indian standard practices.
