Solar Thermal Energy Storage with PCMs

This document discusses using phase change materials (PCMs) to store solar thermal energy. PCMs store heat by undergoing phase changes from solid to liquid or vice versa. They provide compact heat storage at a constant temperature. PCMs being considered include salt hydrates, paraffins, non-paraffins, and inorganic eutectics. Storing solar heat in PCMs can improve energy systems by smoothing output and increasing reliability. It also helps utilize solar energy continuously despite intermittent sunlight. PCM thermal storage has applications in water heating, greenhouses, building heating/cooling, cooking, and waste heat recovery.

SOLAR HEAT ENERGY STORAGE IN PHASE CHANGE

MATERIALS

ABSTRACT

Developing efficient and inexpensive energy storage devices is as

important as developing new sources of energy. Energy storage can reduce the
time between energy supply and energy demand, thereby playing a vital role in
energy conservation. It improves the energy systems by smoothening the output
and thus increasing the reliability .The intermittent and dynamic nature of solar
irradiance and the need to utilize solar energy systems in a continuous and static
load , make the use of storage systems essential in most of the potential uses of
solar energy. Amongst the various heat storage techniques of interest is latent
heat storage in comparison to sensible heat storage. The use of phase change
materials (PCMs) can be found in solar energy storage systems for water
heating, green houses, heating and cooling of buildings, cooking and waste heat
recovery systems .This paper deals with storage of solar thermal energy in
materials undergoing phase changes. PCMs, which include salt hydrates,
paraffins, non-paraffins, and eutectics of inorganic, are discussed. Heat storage
in phase change materials (PCM) has an advantage of compactness and heat
supply at constant temperature.
