Overview of Industrial Robotics Types

Industrial robotics can be summarized as follows: 1) Industrial robots are automatically controlled, reprogrammable, and multipurpose manipulators that are programmed to move parts or tools. 2) The main types of industrial robots are Cartesian, SCARA, articulated, and polar robots, which are used for tasks like pick and place work, assembly operations, machine tool handling, and welding. 3) Industrial robots consist mainly of a controller, arm, end effectors, drive, and sensors. The controller acts as the brain and runs programs, the arm positions end effectors, end effectors function as hands, drives provide motion, and sensors provide feedback.

INDUSTRIAL ROBOTICS

 Automatically controlled
 Reprogrammable
 Multipurpose manipulator programmable
TYPES OF ROBOTS
 Cartesian Robot
 SCARA Robot
 Articulated Robot
 Polar Robot
CARTESIAN / GANTRY ROBOT:

 Used for pick and place work,

application of sealant, assembly
operations, handling machine tools and arc
welding.

 Consists of three sliding joints, two of

which are orthogonal

 Other names include rectilinear robot

and x-y-z robot
SCARA ROBOTS

SCARA stands for Selectively

Compliant Assembly Robot Arm.

The vertical axes are used for shoulder

and elbow joints to be compliant in
horizontal direction for vertical insertion
tasks.

Used for pick and place work,

application of sealant, assembly operations
and handling machine tools. It's a robot
which has two parallel rotary joints to
provide compliance in a plane.
ARTICULATED ROBOTS:

Used for assembly operations, diecasting,

fettling machines, gas welding, arc welding and
spray painting. It's a robot whose arm has at
least three rotary joints.

SPHERICAL/POLAR
ROBOT:

Used for handling at machine tools,

spot welding, diecasting, fettling machines,
gas welding and arc welding. It's a robot whose
axes form a polar coordinate system.
ROBOT PARTS

An industrial robot includes these main parts:

•Controller
•Arm
•End Effectors
•Drive
•Sensor
CONTROLLER
Brain of the robot
Works as a computer
Connects robots with other systems
Runs a set of instructions written in code
called a program

ROBOT ARMS

Vary in shape and size

Positions the end effectors
END EFFECTORS
Functions as a hand
Connects to the robot’s arm

DRIVE
Engine or motor
Moves the links into designated positions

SENSORS

Allows the robot to receive feed back
Collects the informatjon and sends electronically
to the controller
Assist end effectors in part variances
ROBOT APPLICATIONS
 Need to replace human labour by robots:

 Work environment hazardous for human beings

 Repetitive tasks
 Boring and unpleasant tasks
 Multi shift operations
 Infrequent changeovers
 Performing at a steady pace
 Operating for long hours without rest
ROBOTS ARC-WELDING CELL
 Robot performs flux-
cored arc welding
(FCAW) operation at
one workstation while
fitter changes parts at
the other workstation
Nuclear Industry
In the nuclear industry, teleoperators have
been well-utilized in the maintenance role for
more than 4
decades. Several features of maintenance make
it a good application for teleoperators in this
arena.

First is the low frequency of the

operation, which calls for a general-purpose
system capable of
doing an array of maintenance tasks.

Second, maintenance and repair require high

levels of dexterity.

Third, the complexity of these tasks may be

unpredictable because of the uncertain impact
of a failure

For these reasons, the choice for this role

is often between a human and a teleoperator.
AIRCRAFT SERVICING

Aircraft servicing applications may benefit

from robotic maintenance in several
areas. The size of
modern multi-engine jets makes inspection
and coating removal and application
particularly attractive
in terms of improving quality and
efficiency
RAILROAD INDUSTRY

The railroad industry has recognized the

economic benefits of automation, which has
lead to the development of a number of robotic
solutions to maintenance and repair applications in
the industry.

The railway maintenance shops are the most

common location of robots, which perform
activities such as welding, grinding, cleaning, and
painting
ROBOTS IN AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRIES

In the automobile industry, robotic arms

are used in diverse manufacturing
processes including assembly, spot
welding, etc. Robots have proved to help
automakers to be more agile, flexible and
to reduce production lead times.

POWER SOURCES
 THE POWER SOURCES USED IN CURRENT ROBOTS
ARE:

 ELECTRIC : All robots use electricity as the primary source

of energy. No energy conversion is required.

 PNEUMATIC : These are generally found in relatively low-

cost manipulators with low load carrying capacity.

 HYDRAULIC :The high power-to-weight ratio makes the

hydraulic actuator an attractive choice for moving moderate
to high loads at reasonable speeds and moderate noise level.
CONCLUSION

Thus we would like to conclude by saying that , as a

mechatronics students we have a vital role in the field of
industrial automation . The best way of automating
industries is using robotics.
