The Case for Cheerleading as a Sport

Cheerleading involves sweat, body contact, and risks of injury similar to other competitive sports like football and hockey. While cheerleading may not look as physically demanding as other sports, cheerleaders put in just as much dedication to their routines and face dangers from complex stunts and tumbling. Cheerleading should not be dismissed just because it combines athleticism with choreography; it requires strength, talent, and risks comparable to other sports.

Writing Assignment #8

Always Against Cheerleading

The true problem is that when we think about athletes and competitive
sports, there is usually a lots of sweat, body contact and maybe some dirt and
blood. By those standards, cheerleading is just like any sport. Cheerleaders
perform for certain a amount of time, giving their performance, and all they
have to do is the best job they can, just as football players go out to play a
good game after being given their next play.
Cheerleaders sweat, but it is often masked by their makeup, quick
movements and lack of coverage when they are off stage, whereas football
players are often seen resting on the sidelines with sweat dripping off them.
Cheerleaders also have a lot of body contact as well, but for them it is part of
the routine - a requirement and a test of physical ability in many ways similar to
boxing. And there is occasionally blood and dirt, with scrapes, falls and broken
bones, however it is commonly only seen at the practices.
Another problem is that cheerleading is often called a feminine sport.
However, if you were to ever truly pay attention, there are also males on the
average team. The same as you could catch a female on a football team, or in a
hockey jersey. So cheerleading isn't just a bunch of females jumping around in
small uniforms, because there can also be males on a team too.
Cheerleading is can also heard to be one of the most dangerous sports
around, with the drastic stunts and the outrageous tumbling, yet on a you could
get just as hurt playing football, hockey or even soccer. And with the
dedication cheerleaders put into not only a routine but into being a
cheerleader, they are aware of the dangers, but are also aware of the
excitement gained in a performance.
All in all, cheerleading may not be the messiest sport, but just because they
look nice and perform in unison does not mean they aren't some of the
strongest and most talented athletes around, and just as Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr. had a dream, so do I, but not only that we will come together as a
nation, but that all sports are seen as one and well recognized for their talents
and abilities.
