Tutorial 1(Data Acquisition)
1. a) Outline the steps commonly employed in an analytical procedure
b) You want to prepare 1 L of a solution containing 1.00 ppm Fe2+. How many
grams ferrous ammonium sulfate FeSO4(NH4)2SO4.6H2O, must be dissolved and
diluted in 1 L? What would be the molarity of this solution? (MW
FeSO4(NH4)2SO4.6H2O – 391.97 g/mol, AW Fe – 55.85 g/mol)
2. a) Explain the difference between accuracy and precision. Illustrate the difference
with an example.
b) Describe the difference between determinate error and indeterminate error.
Give example for each type of error.
3. a) You are seated in the jury box for a murder trial. The district attorney has just
brought into evidence the results from a laboratory that analyzed white paint
found under the murder victims finger nails. The paint was found to contain
1.475% titanium dioxide (TiO2).The defendant has provided the results of an
analysis of the paint from the white Mercedes she drives. Four trials of the car
paint analysis for TiO2 are provided below.
1.358 %
1.395 %
1.374 %
1.362 %
i) Should any of these results be discarded? Use the Q-test to verify your answer.
(Use 95% confidence level)
ii) Calculate the standard deviation of the defendant’s results.
1
iii) Is the difference in the paint samples enough to let the defendant off? Use t
test to verify your answer.(Use 95% confidence level)
b) A standard method for determination of CO is known to have a standard
deviation(s) of 0.21 ppm CO. A modification of the method yields a value for s of
0.15 ppm CO with 12 degrees of freedom. A second modification, also based on
12 degrees of freedom, has a value of s of 0.12 ppm CO. Is either modification
significantly more precise than the original? (Critical value/tabulated value for ʋ1
and ʋ2 equal to 12 is 2.69)
c) Your laboratory is evaluating a new colorimetric method for creatinine in
serum. Several sets of analysis are performed over several days. From the
following data, calculate the pooled standard deviation
Day 1 Day 2 Day 3
0.826 0.682 0.751
0.810 0.655 0.702
0.880 0.661 0.699
0.865 0.724
