Understanding Absolute Permeability in Rocks

Absolute permeability is the permeability of a rock that is fully saturated with a single fluid. Effective permeability is lower and accounts for the pore space being shared between multiple fluids. Relative permeability is the ratio of effective permeability to absolute permeability for a given fluid. Factors that impact absolute permeability include the size and shape of sand grains, presence of cementing materials, fracturing and solution features, lamination, and layered formations that can act as permeability barriers.

Absolute Permeability

It is the permeability of the fluid when rock is 100% saturated with only one fluid. It is
represented by k.

Absolute permeability Absolute permeability Absolute permeability

of water of oil of gas

Effective permeability.
It is the permeability of a fluid when the rock shares it pore spaces with another fluid.

Ko= effective permeability of oil

Kg= effective permeability of gas

Kw= effective permeability of water

Gas zone gas zone

water zone water zone

Relative Permeability
The ratio b/w effective permeability of the fluid to the absolute permeability of the fluid

Kro = relative permeability of oil

Krg = relative permeability of gas

Krw = relative permeability of water

Factors affecting absolute permeability
A. Shape and size of sand grains.
If the sand grains are smaller in size then it will decrease permeability as the resistance is
being increased. Similarly, if the shape of the sand grains are rounded(spherical) it will increase
permeability, if the shape is flat, it will decrease permeability.
B. Effect of cementing material.
Cementing material like bauxite, silica etc decrease permeability as it stick on the sand
grain and the pore volume decrease so it simultaneously decrease permeability.

C. Fracturing and solution.

If a reservoir has initially high permeability, then after fracturing its permeability may
increase. If a reservoir has initially low permeability then after fracturing it permeability might
increase or decrease , in carbonate reservoir, the water passes, react to make solution, so the
permeability of the rock increase.

D. Lamination.
Platy minerals such as muscovite and shale lamination, act as barrier to the permeability
