Fingerprint Enhancement with Directional Filters

The document discusses using a directional filter bank (DFB) to enhance fingerprint images. A DFB decomposes an input image into directional sub-bands that are directionally orthogonal. This allows directional information to be extracted and reconstructed. The document shows examples of 2-band and 4-band DFB structures and their frequency partition maps. It also shows examples of directional images produced by a DFB and how a DFB can be used to remove noise from an image, producing an enhanced output image. Potential future applications discussed include image interpolation, overlapping algorithms for facial recognition, and fingerprint identification systems.

Features in Fingerprint Image
Directional Filter bank
 A Directional Filter Bank (DFB) is an array
of selective filters designed to allow
directional information to be extracted in
the analysis section and reconstructed in
the synthesis section.
 DFB decomposes the input signal into
decimated directional sub-bands.
 Each sub-band is directionally orthogonal
to others.
 The sum of all the pixels in the sub-bands
equals to the total number of pixels in the
original image.
