Overview of Router Types and Functions

Routers allow computers and other devices to connect to different networks by determining the best path for data to travel between those networks. There are different types of routers, including wireless routers which connect devices without wires and broadband routers which use ethernet cables and are commonly used for home networks with high-speed internet. Routers provide advantages like enabling communication between local and wide area networks and determining optimal routes, but also have limitations such as higher costs and consuming bandwidth for routing updates.

What Is A Router?

Routers are devices that allow computers to talk to or connect with other
computers as well as other computer hardware. Router connects at
least two networks, commonly two LANs or WANs
Types Of Router

 Wireless Router

 Allow access Internet without the use of wire.

 used by businesses, hospitals or in a university setting as part of a wide area
network or WAN.
 We can communicate with several computers at the same time
Types of Router(Cont.)

 Broadband Router

• Uses ethernet cable for connection

 Designed for setting up home networks with high-speed DSL Internet
 Fast speed and takes less time
Advantages Of Router

 Router can function on LAN & WAN

 Communication between different Networks

 Router can determine best path/route for data to reach the destination
Limitations of Router

 Router is more expensive than Hub, Bridge & Switch.

 Routing updates consume bandwidth.

 Router only work with rout-able protocol
