Engaging Drama Activities for ELT

The document summarizes two drama activities used in a classroom. The first activity had students work in groups to act out scenes using classroom objects to represent elements like a bridge or sea. This helped students practice vocabulary and work cooperatively. The second "Smurf" activity had students move silently around the class as if not to wake sleeping smurfs, promoting unity and observation skills. Both activities effectively engaged students in a creative, risk-taking way to practice language forms in an enjoyable manner.

DRAMA REFLECTION

Last week we talked about classroom space. First activity was happening activity. Class was
divided into 2 groups. Each group had a picture to be acted out. There was a scene (including bridge,
sea, boat, etc) and we were supposed to act them out. Each group created this scene as individually
by becoming bridge, sea or boat. One group asked the other one ‘ What are you?’. And then they
replied ‘ I am…’ or ‘ There is …’. The aim of this activity is creating cooperation, supplying harmony,
being able to observe others, using classroom space effectively, creating context. Here we saw the
importance of classroom space. Students’ partner courage occurs. If they make group work, they can
move from interdependence to independence. It makes the course more meaningful and enjoyable,
for it is much easier rather than giving text. In ELT, it can be used for teaching of ‘may/might,
prepositions, practicing that is/ this is/ these/ those, adjectives, present cont., how many/ how much,
articles’.

Second activity was ‘Smurf’. We were silent and we tried not to harm and wake up the
smurfs. It created unity and harmony in the class. Its aim is to encourage the creativity, observation
and cooperation. In ELT, it can be used as a warm up activity to take the attention. It is used for
teaching of guessing idioms ( I suppose, I think..), vocabulary ( number, weather conditions, colors..),
commands, describing the things, there is/there are, adverb, (walk silently,..), comperative/
superlative ( the laziest of them..).

They are enjoyable, interesting and effective activities. These kinds of activities enable
students to broaden their creativity and then cause them to take more risks in the class.
