“FOREIGN INVESTMENTS IN ROMANIA – FACTS AND OPPORTUNITIES FROM THE
EUROPEAN INTEGRATION PERSPECTIVE. SUCCESS STORIES”
ABSTRACT
The Romanian Government’s policy regarding foreign investment is closely related to the
economic development of the country. The last years displayed a good track record in consolidating the
macroeconomic stability while lowering inflation.
When considering Romania as a possible location for developing their businesses, foreign
investors take into account the advantages offered by Romania. UNCTAD report shows that "more than
half of the companies that decided to move their business to other countries opted for Romania, Poland
and Hungary as destinations in Eastern Europe." The Foreign Investors Council shows why it is good to
invest in Romania: "Romanians are very well educated, skilled and relatively cheap; the market is large
- 22 million inhabitants - and has a good geographic location with transport connections towards Europe
and central Asia. Moreover, the Government has been striving for many years to create a favorable
business environment, which can be seen in the economic growth, diminishing inflation, and political
stability."
A vibrant banking system is essential to the growth of the Romanian economy. The efforts of the
National Bank of Romania during the past several years to create a legal environment compatible with
that in the European Union have succeeded. Such successful efforts should encourage foreign investment
in the banking sector, spurring an attendant growth in the Romanian economy.
According to the Romanian government, one of its main goals is to create a legislative
environment which encourages transparent, efficient and predictable business conditions in accord with
EU norms and taking into account the general and reasonable interests of this country’s business
community. By this criteria alone, the Romanian government has succeeded in introducing public debate
on a timely and important subject; one which is as central to business life in this country as the internal
regulation of corporate entities.
