This document provides instructions for an 8th grade independent reading annotation project. Students must select one book from an independent reading project list and annotate it with at least 20-25 notes. Notes should be 2-3 sentences and comment on contextual/background information, words, literary devices, or commentary. Students should identify where in the text each note refers to. Notes must be typed in 12-point Times New Roman font and include both a printed and electronic copy. The first annotated assignment is due in October.

8th Grade Independent Reading

THIS ASSIGNMENT WILL COUNT AS A MAJOR TEST OR “QUEST” GRADE.1

To furnish2 a text with commentary and/or critical or explanatory notes.

ORIGIN late 16th cent.: from Latin annotat- ‘marked,’ from the verb
annotare, from ad- ‘to’ + nota ‘a mark.’

Your quest, if you chose to accept it, is as follows:

1. Select one book from the Independent reading project. If you are interested
in reading an alternative book by one of the list’s authors (ex. Love,
Charleston bPlease bring it in to me along with a signed note from your
parents/gaurdians expressing their consent. I will review and approve the
book only it if it meets -- appropriate reading level and content.

2. Furnish this book with AT LEAST 20-25 NOTES.

Notes on Notes:

A note
-With the exception of single-word definitions, each note should consist of at least
2-3 complete sentences.

When you furnish a house, you fill it with all of the things a person would need to
live inside of it. Similarly, when you furnish a text with notes, you fill it with all of
the information a person would need to read and understand it.

Technicalities:

-Please identify the place in the text with a small (as shown on the previous
page) *This can be written either IN the text if the book belongs to you OR on
a post=it note with a large arrow marker.

-Please type up notes on a sepe


Size 12 font, Times New Roman. It does not need to be double spaced.

-Citation: Outside sources, do not need to use MLA format – do need to identify the
author, the title of the work and where.

-Turn in a printed copy as well as an electronic one via email. Compile all of the most
effective notes to accompany each text and create a classroom “annotated edition”
