What is the Preliminary Task?

• The preliminary task is part of the set brief for


the G321 coursework. It allows you to show the
examiner that you understand specific filming
concepts and that you can apply them to practical
work.

• It makes up 15 marks of your coursework for AS.


If it is not completed you lose 15 marks from your
coursework!
What is the Point of the
Preliminary Task?
• The examiner wishes to see your media
knowledge and the progression you have
made from preliminary task through to
final coursework. The filming does not need
to be perfect but the understanding of the
concepts needs to be there!
What are you required to do:

• Produce a Continuity task involving: filming


and editing a character opening a door,
crossing a room and sitting down in a chair
opposite another character, with whom
she/he then exchanges a couple of lines of
dialogue.

• This task should demonstrate match on


action, shot/reverse shot and the 180-
degree rule.

Conditions!
• All video and audio material must be original,
produced by the candidate(s), with the exception
of music or audio effects from a copyright-free
source.

• Both preliminary and main tasks may be done


individually or as a group. Maximum 4 members to
a group.

• Any genre!
What you will need to do before
you start filming:
• Plan what you intend to film (storyline, camera shots etc) You can do this on
a storyboard!

• Plan the genre you intend to portray

• Script the piece

• Find actors for the piece

• Plan the equipment you will need (write it down for Miss Peacock)

• Attend a camera class

• Attend an editing class (this will need to be booked in with Miss Peacock,
approximately 1hour)
Filming:
• You will be filming this piece in school,
so you will have to find an appropriate
location to film for your genre.
• You can add in costumes, props etc.
• Be creative with your ideas
How to work effectively in
Media...
• See this as a professional production - NOT a
school project
• When working in a group, divide the tasks up
fairly between you.
• Always ask for help if you are unsure of
anything!
• Plan ahead - check out the deadline dates
and work to them!
