I. INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC
Music is an __________________ and is considered to be an important part of human
life. God has gifted us with creativity so that we can worship him through it.

HOW DO WE APPRECIATE MUSIC?


Music can be HEARD, it can be WRITTEN and can be SANG or PLAYED.

LET US STUDY ONE BASIC MATERIAL FROM WHICH MUSIC IS MADE.


Sound
- the sensation produced by stimulation of the organ of hearing by
vibrations transmitted through the air or other medium.
- mechanical vibrations transmitted through an elastic medium,
traveling in the air at a speed of approximately 1100 feet per second at
sea level.

FOUR PROPERTIES OF MUSIC TONE:


1. Pitch – The highness or lowness of a tone.
2. Duration – the length of time a tone sounds or lasts
3. Intensity – Volume or the loudness or softness of a tone
a. Loud – fast
b. Soft – slow
4. Timbre – tone quality or color.

II. MUSICAL NOTATION


Letter names – ABCDEFG
White keys (letter names)
Black keys (sharps or flats)
Staff (4 spaces, 5 lines)
Clef
G clef (treble clef) – where the key G is located
F clef (bass clef) – where the key F is located
C clef (movable clef) – may be used on any line of the staff

Ledger lines
Grand staff – brace, bar line, treble and bass clef
OTTAVA OR OCTAVE –the note will be played one octave higher
