ARINC Communication Addressing
and Reporting System( ACARS)
ACARS enhances the
effectiveness of air/ground airline
operational control
communications.
The system is designed to
reduce the requirement of voice
communications.
The reduction is done by reporting
automatically the arrival and
departure times of the aircraft and
other operational flight data.
The system uses an assigned VHF
airborne(SATCOM) frequency to tra
nsmit and receive data from ground
station.
Glossary
Data Link. A system that
allows exchange of digital data
over an rf link.
Air traffic control signaling
system (ATCSS) is a data link
system used by the air traffic
control system.
ACARS is a data link
system used by airline
command, control, and
management system,
using VHF
communication
frequencies.
Modes of operation
Demand Mode: An ACARS
mode of operation in which
communications may be init
ialed by the ground process
or or the airborne system.
Polled Mode: An ACARS
mode of operation in which
the airborne system transmi
ts only in response to recei
ved uplink messages (polls)
OUT - OFF - ON - I N
(Oevents
O OisI)recorded
An OOOI
as part of the ACARS
operation.
The OUT event is recorded
when the aircraft is clear of
the gate and ready to taxi.
The OFF event occurs when
the aircraft has lift off the
runway.
The ON event occurs when the
aircraft has landed.
The IN event occurs when the
aircraft has taxied to the ramp
area.
