ABSTRACT:
ANALYSIS/REFLECTION:
Peter Rillero and Helen Padgett argue that deep
conceptual learning allows students to learn
through experience and expand their
knowledge, creating complex ideas and think
outside the box.
Math and science are not just about content.
Its about deep conceptual understanding, where
they gather what they have learned and apply them
to new situations, through this they can create
meaning and reason through explaining their
understand. Although this all sounds great, tools
are limited for students to expand their knowledge.
Usually resulting in the use of traditional texts
books. This new ear of teaching can be a
breakthrough of how students change as life long
learners. As an educator, its important for students
to get away from surface learning, we have been
there we have done it. I dont remember what I
learned in my grade 10 science class, except for the
classes in which I took pride in what I did, such as
dissecting a pig, of course, growing into a partial
vegan/animal lover now, I would never do that in
my life again, but I do remember it. The role of
prior knowledge is important for deep conceptual
learning, as it is used as support for learning new
material if deep understanding is present there is
time for discovery learning, where concepts are
joined together, multiple representations, meaning
students can come up with new ideas, where a
process and product was developed.
