Reflective Essay
What surprised me the most as we delved into a problem area is the time it
took to organize the whole group in an effort to solve the problem. I do not plan to
continue working on this problem because the problem of organization would
gradually become fixed as due dates near. From the process of group work I learned
many things. I learned that the construction of the final paper as a group was much
easier then indivisibly working on a long paper. I have also learned that a con of
group work is organization. In order to work around everyones schedule a lot of
time and effort is required. An advanced notice of a few weeks is needed in order to
get everyone on board on a particular issue or subject. The skills learned din this
group experience is definitely applicable to other portions of my life because it
teaches me how group work works in life. It teaches of the complications and the
benefits of working with other people. The skills that are most applicable are the
communication aspects of group work. In the future learning how to communicate
towards a common goal will definitely come in handy.
Another problem area that I was surprised when delved into was that the
paper was less in my control. I did not have the full option to tailor every part of the
essay to the way I wanted it to be. This is a problem because once the paper is
graded and if the grade is not something that I like then would possibly be
disappointed in the final grade because of this group paper. I do not plan on working
on this problem because in a group context there is no fix for this problem because
taking responsibility for the whole paper alone would become an overwhelming task
that would not be work the effort. A possible remedy to this problem could be that a
group project not be assigned in the class but instead the same project but on a
smaller scale so it would be possible to finish it solo. This aspect of not being in
control of the entire project can relate to other aspects of life because in life I will
definitely not be in control of every possible situation so this could possibly be a
lesion on how to deal with such situations. This can be considered an applicable skill
in being tolerant in such situations where you do not possess all the control over a
situation.
Another problem that was faced was that you had to trust that your group
mates would live up to their part of the burden sort of speak. This from of having
blind fate in a person that you were assigned to work with is definitely an aspect
that is important to the whole process of teamwork. This is not a situation that can
be remedied because again this is an issue of adapting to situations that may not
be how you wish.
