Solving Simultaneous Equations Guide

This document provides steps for solving simultaneous equations: 1. Arrange one equation so that one unknown is the subject. 2. Substitute this equation into the other equation. 3. Simplify the second equation and express it in the form of a quadratic equation. 4. Solve the quadratic equation. 5. Substitute the solution back into the linear equation to find the value of the second unknown. Two examples are provided to demonstrate these steps.

CHAPTER 4: SIMULTANEOUS EQUATION

4.1 Simultaneous Equation

Steps in solving simultaneous equations:

Step 1:
For the linear equation, arrange so that one of the unknown becomes
the subject of the equation.
Step 2:
Substitute the linear equation into the non-linear equation.
Step 3:
Simplify and expressed the equation in the general form of quadratic
equation ax2 + bx + c = 0.
Step 4:
Solve the quadratic equation.
Step 5:
Find the value of the second unknown by substituting the value
obtained into the linear equation.
Example 1
Solve the following simultaneous equations.
y+x=9
xy = 20
