Cant Deficiency and Excess in Railways

This document contains instructions for a Civil Engineering examination on Railway, Tunnel, Harbour and Airport Engineering. It outlines the exam structure which includes answering two questions from each of parts A, B and C. Part A covers railway engineering topics like the role of railways, track components, and wheel coning advantages. Part B focuses on tunnel engineering including construction methods, lining techniques and ventilation. Harbour engineering is addressed in part C involving forces on breakwaters, functions of jetties and dry docks, and harbour site selection factors. The maximum marks for the exam are 100 over three hours.

RAILWAY, TUNNEL, HARBOUR AND AIRPORT ENGINEERING

(ELECTIVE)
Time: 03 Hours
Instructions to candidates:

Maximum Marks: 100

Answer TWO questions from Part A, TWO questions from part B and one from
Part C.

PART- A
1 a Explain the role of railways in the development of a country.
b Draw a typical cross section of a single Broad Gauge (BG) track in
embankment and name the components.
c Explain coning of wheels and what are its advantages.
2 a Enumerate and explain the various resistances which have to be
overcome by a train, from rest to motion state.
b Calculate the maximum permissible train load that can be pulled by a
locomotive having four pairs of driving wheels carrying an axel load of
24 tonnes each. The train has to run at a speed of 80 Kmph on a
straight level track (BG). Also calculate the reduction in speed if train
has to climb up gradient of 1 in 200. If the train climbs the gradient
with a 20 curve, what would be the reduction in speed. Given
coefficient of friction 0.166.
3 a Explain briefly cant deficiency, cant excess and Negative cant.
b Define
crossing
and explain important
requirements
characteristics of a good crossing.
c Explain in brief the maintenance of track components.
