DYNAMIC OR EFFECTIVE SHEAR MODULUS, G
For zone IV and site-class A, the value of mapped spectral accelerations for short periods (0.2
second), S S ' and the value of mapped spectral accelerations for long period (1 second), S1' are
obtained for 2500 years event (i.e., 2 % chances of expedience in 50 years) from PSHA map of
India as,
S S ' = 0.6 and S1' = 0.24
Therefore, for Site-class B
S S = 0.6 x 1.25 = 0.75
S1 = 0.24 x 1.25 = 0.30
Now from Table A-2 and A-3 of PSHA report, site-class modification factor for site-class D (which
is taken as medium soil in this study)
Fa = 1.2 and Fv = 1.8
Hence, the maximum considered short-period spectral response acceleration parameter, SXS, and
the design spectral response acceleration parameter at one-second, SX1 are obtained as,
SXS = Fa SS = 1.2 x 0.75 = 0.9
Now
S XS 0.9
= 0.36
2.5 2.5
Therefore, form Table 4-7, FEMA 356,
G
0.9 0.5
0.9
0.26 0.5533
Go
0.1 0.4
Now for = 20 kN/m3 and s = 200 m/s,
Navg = 20 for sit-class D, initial shear modulus, Go will be,
Go
s2
g
= 81.54 x 106 N/m2
Therefore, G = G/Go x Go
= 0.5533 x 81.54 x 106
= 45.12 x 106 N/m2
= 45.12 MPa
