(although dovetail joints can be used to attach
other materials as well--this joint is also used in
turbines). The joint consists of pins and tails (the
pins on end fit into the tails on the other end).

attach the sides of a drawer to the front of a
furniture piece.

The dovetail joint works especially well


in tension, it forms a strong connection
that cannot easily be torn apart. This
explains it’s use as a connection for
drawers--the joint is able to resist the
pulling force that is essential to the func-
tion of this furniture type.
