Your TVR Committee wish to encourage you to join us. This year we return to our usual bankside location on Copas Meadow opposite Temple Island. We have designed a weekend with the accent on relaxation and fun intertwined with the established TVR events. This is only the third TVR that Christine and | have attended. The rotation of the Event Chairmanship to the TWYC resulted in me being asked to represent my Club as this year's Chairman. For me this is a special privilege and an opportunity to put something back into the cruising calendar. There is something rather special about cruising on the Thames especially when in the company of a Club where size of boat or wallet make no impact on the welcoming and continuing friendship and support experienced. The TVR founders recognised these values and it is important that successive Clubs and their members continue to meet each year to refresh and renew this boating spirit. | would like to take this opportunity to record my grateful thanks to a loyal and hard working committee and to those others from our Clubs who make the weekend happen. Designers are reminded that displays featuring club colour and emblems are always acceptable. The judges will be independent of competing clubs. Table Decoration Competition -The Storton Rose Bowl The intention is to make the marquee attractive for the Rally Dinner by awarding a trophy to the Club that lays its tables in the most attractive manner. Clubs are expected to apply the same design to all complete tables that they occupy, not concentrating on one table at the expense of the others. Displays should exploit readily available floral and table decoration materials. Originality and taste will be rewarded but excessive model making in favour of floral design is discouraged and will not influence the judge. The budget for flowers and materials should not exceed £15.00 per table. The table decorations will be judged immediately before the annual dinner on Sunday Evening. Illuminated Boat Competition - Ivory Gem Trophy Clubs are invited to enter this competition for the best illuminated boat. More than one boat may be entered by a Club. Illuminated boats will not be required to cruise. Safety regarding cable trips hazards, generators and electrical problems is paramount. Please illuminate decorated boats on both Saturday and Sunday evenings. Judging will take place on the Saturday evening at 21.00 hours approx. Bankside Lighting All clubs are still required to illuminate the tow path beside their boats to aid members to safely return to their boats late at night. Adequate lighting should be provided either hung on poles or on the side of the boats. This is not a competition item. Clubs should consider safety when constructing their lighting, for example connections should be electrically safe in rain or dew. Arrangements outlined in this programme are designed to minimise the risk of accidents occurring and to ensure that, in the unlikely event of an accident, the safety services are alerted at the earliest opportunity. Attendees are asked for their co-operation in achieving a successful and safe rally. The Fire Assembly point is the Road opposite the upstream end of Temple Island. Please be aware that water sports inherently carry a risk and that you are in an area of deep water VHF - To cover emergencies a continual daytime watch will be kept on channels 10 & 16. Attending Craft — All craft attending the Rally must first be registered with the Environment Agency and display a current licence. Regulations for the avoidance of collisions (Thames Navigation & General Byelaws 1993) are to be observed at all times. All vessels including dinghies must carry a valid licence. Dinghies All dinghies and tenders must conform to Environment Agency regulations and must be handled with due care and consideration to all other river users. Except for Safety and Official craft, dinghies and tenders are not to be used within the competition area on Sunday during the competition. Safety Equipment — All craft must carry basic safety equipment such as fire extinguishers, warning devices, anchors, first aid box, lifebuoys, personal buoyancy aids and adequate mooring lines. Personal Safety ~ Personal buoyancy aids must be worn at all times by children, non-swimmers and other vulnerable persons when onboard craft, in dinghies or about the Rally site. Non-slip footwear is advised for everyone. For additional safety at night, please carry a torch, Be particularly careful when moving between boats and try to have another person present. For your own safety and that of others, please take care to keep children supervised at all times.NOTICES & SAFETY INFORMATION (Cont.) Peace — May we ask you to control noise from generators, radios etc so that your neighbours are not disturbed, especially late at night and early morning Barbecues — Please ensure that the ground beneath any barbecue is protected from burning. Person Overboard — There is always the possibility of a crew member falling overboard. The person should be recovered from the water as soon as possible and if unconscious the Emergency Services must be called immediately on 999. The Rally Safety Officer should be notified at once. Remember — alcohol and even medical drugs can seriously impair your judgment and hence endanger your safety. Access to the Rally site is via Remenham Village; follow TVR signs and park by the side of the track well away from the river bank, Public Footpath - The metalled path that runs alongside the-riverbank is in constant use by members of the public both on foot and on bicycles. Care must be taken not to obstruct the path and lines/mooring stakes must be kept clear. Also beware when crossing the path on foot. Arrival of Boats — Club members are requested to call their Club Steward on VHF Ch.10 on arrival. To enhance the Rally atmosphere it would be appreciated if attending craft could dress overall, to be retained during the Sailpast. Pet Owners — Owners who bring pets must not allow them to roam loose. Their “needs” must be satisfied under the owners control away from the riverside path, the boats and the marquee area. Pets are not allowed in the marquee. Boat Refuse — A skip will be found behind the marquee. Please deposit all boat refuse accordingly. Whilst this is a competition we hope that crews will enter into the spirit of the rally and have a go. All three tests feature boat handling skills that are a part of Thames cruising. If you wish to enter your boat please advise your Club Steward. Thank you and good luck Test 1— ATYC Test 14 — Mooring on a Moored Boat Moor alongside a moored boat for a long stay Take the fore and aft shore lines to moor to the shore It is to be assumed that the boat being moored to is unmanned Test 2— ATYC Test 15 — Stem the Tide for 1 Minute Proceed down stream past the Judge. When called proceed up stream to a position approximately 30' out from the Judge. When in position, and ready, signal the controller and then stem the current for one minute. Test 3 ATYC Test 16 — Retrieve a Fender from the Tideway Head down river past the test site. A fender will be placed mid stream for your boat to retrieve. Retrieve the fender and return it to the Test site.COMPETITION RULES Competitors should make sure of picking up the competition guide lines from their Club Steward The Berkshire side of the river between the upstream and downstream ends of Temple Island will be closed to all river traffic. Under no circumstances are competitors to travel through the test area other than when competing. All movements of craft to and from the test area must be made using the Bucks side of the Island. Extreme caution should be used, as all other river traffic will be funnelied through this restricted area. All entrants must hold a current insurance policy covering Third Party Liability to an indemnity limit of not less than £3,000,000 Skippers are expected at all times to make their own decisions on matters of the safety of both their craft, crews and third parties. The organisers of the competition together with the officers and servants of the Thames Valley Rally accept no responsibility for damage to entrants’ craft or to members of the public and their property. The organisers reserve the right to amend or cancel any pre-published tests at any time, in the interests of safety. In all cases the Judges decision will be final. Whilst the tests are not timed, it is expected that each exercise will be carried out ina seamanlike manner and a competitor will be asked to abandon the test after 15 minutes. Marking will stop on the expiry of this time. Competitors must not proceed to the next test until instructed to do so. Channel 10 is designated a listening watch channel for competitors. Conversation, except in emergencies, should be avoided. _ Life jackets must be worn at all times. Sound signals are NOT required. Temple Island is strictly out of bounds to all competitors. The club has been in existence for over 30 years and is run by the members, for the members. Each year, both throughout the season and during the winter months, the Commodore of the Club produces a full programme of functions and events that include both social and boating activities. Whilst we have excellent relations with MDL who operate the Marina, being a berth- holder is not a pre-requisite to being a member of our club, in fact we even have members who do not have a boat! We arrange a comprehensive programme of boating events — both up-river and down-river cruises, boat handling clinics, and trips further afield to Rochester or Chatham and beyond. Supplementing the boating events is an excellent social programme, from black tie dinners to fancy dress discos, children’s fun days to charity weekends. This year we also have several bank-side socials arranged at various venues away from the Marina. Visitors and members of other clubs are always most welcome to pop into the club. On behalf of Bray | would like to thank the TVR committee for all their hard work organising this year's rally. From its humble beginnings as a competition between five clubs this event has evolved into a premier event in the boating calendar. Bray has been part of the TVR since the very beginning and it is now an integral part of our club calendar. Bray also holds a variety of other events throughout the year. During the winter months we hold a number of socials at our clubhouse in the MDL marina at Bray or we join other clubs for land-based activities. During the boating season Bray holds a number of up river and tidal cruises. One of the reasons members join the club is to go on one of our tidal cruises. We have two cruises in particular to suit the ‘tidal virgins’. The first is our ‘Marathon’ Cruise to Limehouse Marina on 25" April where we get ring side seats to watch the London Marathon as an added bonus. The second is our Spring Cruise to Rochester Cruising Club for the more adventurous sea farers. Equally popular are our two BBQs in June and September held at Hurley and Cookham Lock Islands. Our last Lady Commodore, Susan Lole, was elected 10 years ago. This is the year when HMYC is being revamped to bring it into line with what members actually want and not what the committee believe they want. You may have heard on the grape-vine that HMYC was folding, which was due primarily to the lack of support and enthusiasm of its members. When questioned the members quoted time and time again that the events we were arranging were very samey, uninteresting and rather expensive. Realising that the Club could not survive in its present form, the members were asked what they felt about the club and what was needed in the future. As a result their views were taken into consideration and my programme for 2010 was arranged accordingly. This programme appears to have revitalised the Club and promoted lots of interest from our members. We now have a full committee and Commodores lined up for at least 2 years, so there is a future for the HMYC.
