7. As part of the team tasked with cleaning up the lower Duwamish waterway you
are asked to determine whether the bottom sediments (contaminated with PCBs,
arsenic lead and mercury) are a risk to the Puget Sound ecosystem. Tests show
that sediment will be re-suspended and flow to the Sound if the bottom shear
stress exceeds 0.8 Pa. Consider the 1 km long and 200 m wide stretch of river
below.
a) Use conservation of momentum (and mas) to determine the bottom shear
stress () if the discharge is 300 m3/s. Will sediment be re-suspended?
b) What value would you get for the shear stress if you assumed the flow was
uniform? How wrong would you be? Compute the percent error.
