Representative Smith Statement: Safe Hunting License Act Clears Committee

MADISON - Rep. Jeff Smith (D-Eau Claire) released the following statement on the Safe
Hunting License Act (AB 737) being unanimously approved by the Assembly Committee on
Public Safety:

“I authored the Safe Hunting License Act to improve hunter safety and make sure our state’s
proud hunting legacy, dating back over 150 years, is preserved and protected. This bill makes a
sensible reform to our hunting laws to ensure convicted felons who are not legally allowed to
possess firearms, cannot obtain a gun hunting license from the DNR. The record number of
felons who were in the woods with a firearm last year demonstrates the need for the appropriate
regulatory oversight provided by this legislation. I’m pleased the bill received unanimous
support by the Public Safety Committee and I urge swift passage by the full Assembly.”
