SmartPlant Instrumentation Admin Guide

There are two types of users responsible for administration in SmartPlant Instrumentation/Electrical - the System Administrator and Domain Administrator. The System Administrator can create and manage domains, users, and define Domain Administrators. A Domain Administrator can access a specific domain and perform activities like defining access rights, plant hierarchies, and tag naming conventions before engineers enter data. The document outlines the various activities each type of administrator can perform.

ADMIN ACTIVITY REPORT

There are two special types of users who are responsible for administration activities:
The System Administrator is a user who works in SmartPlant Instrumentation at the
Admin schema level. This means that this user can create and manage domains, set up
various domain definitions, create users and define one or more users as Domain
Administrators.
A user defined as Domain Administrator can access a specific domain and then perform
various activities at the Domain schema level before engineers can start entering data
into the database.

The Domain Administrator in SmartPlant Instrumentation is tasked with organizing users into groups and granting them specific access rights . They manage the plant hierarchy and naming conventions, which directly influences how users can navigate and interact with the system, ensuring that each user has the necessary permissions to perform their job functions efficiently . By carefully managing access rights, the Domain Administrator enhances project security, preventing unauthorized access and potential data breaches, while also optimizing workflow efficiency by ensuring that users have tailored access to the tools and data they need .

The creation of custom fields and tables by Domain Administrators is crucial as it allows SmartPlant Instrumentation projects to be tailored to the specific requirements of a project. These customizations enable the storage of project-specific data that may not be accommodated by default fields and structures . Custom fields and tables increase the flexibility of the system, allowing project-specific data to be captured and utilized efficiently without disrupting existing data structures. This adaptability is essential for projects that have unique requirements or specifications outside the norm .

Report management in SmartPlant Instrumentation is a critical feature used by both System and Domain Administrators to optimize project documentation and analysis. System Administrators use report management to generate system administrative reports which can provide insights into domain setups and configurations . Domain Administrators set report management options for domain-specific activities and use them for generating custom reports like Domain Administrator Reports, Instrument profiles, and others . These reports are vital for auditing, tracking changes, and assessing project progress, helping administrators maintain oversight and make informed decisions regarding project operations .

Organizing users into groups within SmartPlant Instrumentation helps manage complex projects by streamlining access control and collaboration. It allows Domain Administrators to assign access rights based on group roles, ensuring that users have appropriate permissions corresponding to their functions and responsibilities, which enhances security and operational efficiency . This group-based structure facilitates coordinated efforts across different project segments, as users within the same group have access to the same resources and data, promoting collaboration and efficient communication .

Info maker features like setting links and dropdown styles enhance the user interface and experience by enabling a more intuitive and interactive navigation within SmartPlant Instrumentation. Setting links allows for quick access to related data or tools, improving workflow efficiency. Dropdown styles enhance data entry by providing users with a predictable and streamlined way to select options, minimizing entry errors . These features contribute to a user-friendly interface, leading to better user engagement and productivity by simplifying complex processes and facilitating smoother navigation within the software .

Initializing a domain in SmartPlant Instrumentation includes several critical steps: setting up the PAU structure, naming conventions, databases, user access and control, preference handling, and report management . This process is crucial because it establishes the foundational data structure and permissions necessary for secure and organized data entry and management. Without this setup, engineers would lack the necessary framework and access to safely and efficiently enter project data into the system .

Instrument profiles and specification templates are essential for organizing and executing projects efficiently in SmartPlant Instrumentation. Instrument profiles allow Domain Administrators to define and manage the specifications of various instruments used within a project, ensuring consistency and adherence to project requirements . Specification templates streamline this process by providing predefined formats that can be applied to instruments, reducing the time spent on manual entry and ensuring that specifications meet project standards. Together, they standardize the instrument management process, aiding in efficient project execution .

Modifications to the PSR file and the browser management features can significantly enhance SmartPlant Instrumentation's functionality and usability. Modifying the PSR file allows administrators to tailor the generation of the Instrument Index and I/O list to meet specific project specifications, ensuring that data is presented in a manner that aligns with project needs . The browser management features, including creating views and using the compare feature, enable users to efficiently manage data by providing customized ways to view and analyze it, enhancing usability and decision-making capabilities. Export options in browser management also facilitate data sharing and external analysis .

The System Administrator in SmartPlant Instrumentation is responsible for activities at the Admin schema level, which include creating and managing domains, setting up domain definitions, and managing users, including defining Domain Administrators . Specific activities include initializing a domain in the database, which involves activities like backup, user access control, and report management . In contrast, a Domain Administrator operates at the Domain schema level and is responsible for accessing specific domains to organize the plant hierarchy, define naming conventions, create custom fields, and manage user groups . The Domain Administrator also handles domain report generation and implements project-specific modifications such as modification in PSR files and browser management .

The Project restore and Backup functionalities are critical for data management and security in SmartPlant Instrumentation. The backup process ensures that all data is reliably saved and can be recovered in the event of data loss or corruption, safeguarding against potential system failures . The project restore functionality complements this by allowing the system to revert to a previous state if issues arise, thus maintaining continuity and integrity of the project data. Together, these functionalities mitigate risk and ensure data resilience and reliability .
