Riverside Police Use Twitter for Lost Dogs

The Riverside Police Department will begin using their Twitter account to post photos of lost or abandoned dogs found in the area. Officers will take photos of any lost dogs and include the location and details on how the owner can be reunited. This is an extension of the police department's policy from 2014 to use a no kill animal shelter. Any dogs brought to the shelter by police will be held for 10 days in hopes that tweeting photos will help owners find their lost pets more quickly.

Riverside Police to Use Twitter for Lost Dogs


Throughout the year Riverside officers answer many animal complaints - some being about lost dogs or dogs
that have been abandoned.
Riverside Police will begin immediately using the RPD Twitter account to send out photos of lost or abandoned
dogs that they may come in contact with while on duty.
Officers will take a photo of the dog and post it to the RPD Twitter account with the time and location of where
the dog was found. The Tweet will relay how to recover the dog or how to reunite the dog with its owner.
Lt. Bill Gutschick did the research for this initiative and brought it to the chief for implementation.
Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel stated, "This is really just a continuation of our overall animal policy
when it comes to family pets. In September 2014 Riverside Police announced that we were utilizing a no kill
shelter for animals. Now, in addition to using that shelter, well be Tweeting photos of lost dogs so that they
can quickly be reunited with their owners."
Riverside Police entered into an agreement with Countryside Veterinarian Center on the 9800 block of West
55th Street. Dogs brought in by Riverside Police will
be held for 10 days as police look for the owner.
After 10 days, the animal will be put up for adoption
and remain at Countryside Veterinarian Center until
adopted. It is RPDs hope that tweeting photos of
dogs will speed up the process for owners to find
them within the 10 days.
