Types of Data Transmission Media Explained

There are three main types of data transmission media described: 1) Coaxial cable which has a limited transfer rate of 10mbps. 2) Optical fiber cable which transmits data as light pulses and has advantages of better security, lighter weight, and not being affected by electrical interference. 3) Twisted pair cable which is made of pairs of copper wire and is cheaper and easier to install than other options.

6 Data transmission media

Describe 3 types of data transmission?
The coaxial cable which is made of stiff copper wire. The data transfer rate through this
cable limited to just 10mbps.

The optical fibre cable sends data as pulses of light. One light can signal 1 bit. This fibre
consists of extremely thin fibre or glass or plastic. Many advantages of optical fibre cables
include that it has better security, thinner and light than coaxial cables and isn’t affected by
electrical interference.

A twisted pair cable is pairs of copper wire twisted together. When this cable is used in
networks it is called unshielded twisted pair. Its advantages are that it is cheap and easy to
install.

Give 3 advantages of optical fibres over copper wire cables for data
transmission as well as give one disadvantage?
Optical fibre has better security than a coaxial cable, it is also lighter than it and it isn’t
affected by lightning and power surges. Its disadvantage though is that optical fibre isn’t
easy to join and terminate.

Describe one disadvantage of using radio waves to transmit data?

The biggest disadvantage that radio waves have is that the security is pretty poor and the
signal interference is bad as well. Anyone can tune into your radio frequency as well as
intercept your data transmissions.

Explain the difference between optical fibre and the UTP cables?
The difference between these two cables is the cost. Optical fibre is very expensive to install
and repair while a UTP cable is a lot cheaper. Also a UTP can transfer data at 1000mbps.
