Underhand Serve Technique in Volleyball

This document provides a task analysis for teaching the underhand volleyball serve. It describes the proper form and technique for an underhand serve, including facing the target, stepping with the opposite foot, contacting the ball with an open palm at waist height, and following through upward. It then lists two drills - "Duck on the Pond" and "Bombs Away" - that can be used to develop students' underhand serving skills while making the practice competitive and engaging. The goal is for students to consistently underhand serve the volleyball over the net and into the opposing court using proper form.

GLCES: [Link].08.01-02., [Link].08.05
VISUAL DESCRIPTION:
Facing the target the student will step with the opposing foot and contact
the volleyball with an open palm at waist height, then proceed to follow
through with the hand, upward, towards the target.
MOVEMENT SEQUENCE (* by key 4 steps)

VERBAL CUES

1. Face target

2. Opposite foot forward

3. Flat surface with hand for contact of ball

4. Contact ball between knee and waist level

5. Follow through upward and to the target

TASK COMPLEXITY VARIABLES
Add 3-part objective here:
Action Students will underhand serve the volleyball consistently over the
net using proper form and technique
Condition Students will underhand serve the volleyball from behind or at
the service line and serve the ball 9m, over the net, and into the opposing
court.
Criterion Students will underhand serve the volleyball over the net and in
bounds 4 times with proper form

DRILLS/ACTIVITIES TO DEVELOP THE SKILL- two examples of

games/activities, with explanations.

1. Duck on the pond. Students will underhand serve the ball over the net
and sit wherever their ball lands within the court dimensions. If a peer
serves a ball and the student sitting is able to catch the ball, without
having their bottom leave the floor, both students are free to continue
serving. Make it more challenging by dividing the students into teams
and first team to have all students sitting (in the pond) loses the game.
The game practices the skill and technique of the underhand serve
while attempting accuracy.
Equipment needs:
- Volleyballs
- Volleyball court
- Volleyball net

2. Bombs away: students will underhand serve into the opposing court
where three students with baskets wait to catch the ball. Students may
move the baskets in order to catch the ball but may not steal a ball
from another player. Once a ball is caught, the student who serves the
ball switches with the catcher. This game may be going on different
courts to ensure all students have active participation.
Equipment needs:
