Installing and Removing PROMT Professional 9.5 Translator 3.2. Installing Translator ‘The retail (boxed) version of the translator comes with a CD-ROM disc containing all the files and information necessary for installation. When purchasing online, the installer will be downloaded from the PROMT web site or the web site of one of our online resellers. Hib cfore installation, quit any running Windows applications. Depending on the version of the product you have, do one of the following + insert the installer CD-ROM disc into your optical drive. If the installer does not launch automatically (depends on your operating system settings), use standard methods of Windows OS to launch the installer, which resides in the root folder of the PROMT suite installer disc; + launch the PROMT translator installer file you have downloaded. ‘The installation wizard window will open. Follow the onscreen instructions 1. Choose the user interface language from the pop-up menu. Ifthe translator does not support multiple languages, this option is unavailable. Ifnecessary, enter the product ID. If the ID is entered incorrectly, the installation wizard will notify you. Reenter the ID. After reading the license agreement, accept or rejectit. Ifyou reject t, the installation will be canceled. 4, Enter your license number. If the license mumber is entered incorrectly, the installation wizard wall notify you. Reenter the license number 5. Enter the user name or organization name 6. Ifnecessary, select the destination location for the installation. By default, the translator will install to C:\Program Files\PRMT9. 7. Choose your installation type: Complete or Custom. 8. Reviewand confirm your installation choices. If you need to make changes, go back to the respective installation steps. 9. Complete the installation3.3. Activating Translator After installation, you need to activate your copy of PROMT transiator within 45 days. You can do this by using the activation wizard. Its window wall automatically open each time you launch any application of the translator suite. If you do not activate your product vathin 45 days after installation, you will not be able to access any PROMT translator applications until you activate them. Follow the instructions of the activation wizard: 1. Carefully read the activation instructions. You may need the information presented in this step later for manual activation. 2. Choose activation mode + Automatic—for automatic activation. You can optionally enter your user registration information here. Ei this mode requires an active Intemet connection, + Manval—for manual activation. In this mode you will receive your activation code using one of the methods from the previous step. Enter it in the respective field. You can also enter your user registration information here 3. Complete your activation. 3.3.1. Activating the Lease Version A lease version of PROMT translator which you can purchase on subscription and use within a certain period must be activated right after installation. Do the following 1. Launch any application 2. Inthe “Prolong the subscription” window, click Prolong, 3. In the Registration dialog box, enter the license number of the product and click Prolong 4. Proceed with activation until the following message appears: “The product is successfully activated” ‘You can find the current lease period in the About window of any application contained in the product His cays prior to the current lease expiration, a lease expiration alert that suggests purchasing lease prolongation (and specifies the number of days left) wall appear when launching applications El Lease prolongation means purchasing and activation ofa new license number. To do this, you do not need to reinstall the product. The lease period wall be prolonged for the duration provided by the new license number.Chapter 3. Removing or Modifying Translator [ii ttnecessary, save all your user data and settings using PROMT Backup before removing any of the applications of the suite. ‘You can completely remove the PROMT translator software from your computer or customize the installed applications of the PROMT suite. To do this, use the “Add or Remove Programs” tool included inthe standard Windows installation Choose PROMT in the list of installed applications, and then do one of the following + to completely remove the translator click Remove. + to install or remove an application from the PROMT translator suite, click Change. Key Concepts ET take full advantage of the capabilities of PROMT translator you should familiarize yourself with the key concepts below Term Language Pair Description Specifies from which language and into which language the text will be translated, ‘Translation Profile General dictionary AA set of saved linguistic settings available from all applications ofthe PROMT suite that can be configured to translate texts fora specific subject or field ‘The basic dictionary for each language pair. This dictionary contains the general lexicon. It is always enabled in the engine and cannot be edited Specialized Dictionary User Dictionary ‘Translation Memory (TM) Database A dictionary that extends the engine’s vocabulary in specific subjects and fields. Specialized dictionaries cannot be edited. A dictionary that is created, edited, and updated by the user A user dictionary 1s comprised of new words or phrases, as well as modified entries from general, specialized, or other user dictionaries ‘A database that stores translation units which consist ofa source segment (typically, a sentence) and its target, translated segment counterpart. During translation, segments of the source text that is to be translated are compared to the contents of the TM database. Ifthey match completely or partially (the match is expressed as a percentage), then the corresponding translation is used from the ‘TM database ulChapter 4. Beginning Work 4.2. User dictionanees allow you to add new words or phrases, or change dictionary entries from the General, specialized or other user dictionaries. In addition, you can use Translation Memory (TM) databases for high quality translation of documents containing identical or standardized text. Translation Profiles and Current Translation Settings One of the most powerful tools for improving the quality of translation of the PROMT suite is the combined use of the following linguistic settings: + list of enabled dictionaries, + list of words that do not require translation (reserved words), + list of enabled Translation Memory databases, + list of translation rules for specific language pattems; + list of preprocessors that allow for preliminary processing of source text; + ability to transtiterate unknown words and display variants of translation Translation profites are used to save the above settings. Translation profiles enable the system to use these settings later and to fine-tune the system to transtate texts on specific subjects throughout all the applications of the PROMT suite Fi Each language pair has its own set of translation profiles. You can also create new translation profiles and delete and edit existing profiles Fi Each language pair contains a general translation profile called “General lexicon”. You cannot remove or rename this translation profile, but you can edit it. This translation profile always contains a General dictionary A General dictionary isa baseline dictionary for every language pair. It isa repository of the most frequently used words and phrases in a language (those commonly found in, for example, personal correspondence, simple fiction texts, or newspaper or magazine articles). General dictionaries are always enabled in the translation system. They are not displayed in the dictionary list and cannot be edited. ‘When translating, each PROMT application always uses a translation profile that has either been chosen by the user or isa default profile Whatever the choice, the translation profile parameters become the current translation settings for the application. You can change the current translation settings while working in PROMT Translator / PROMT Translator Lite, as well as in PROMT extensions for Microsoft Office. This helps you quickly find the optimal combination of settings for translating a given document open in one of these applications i ttyou made changes to the current translation settings in an application, you need to translate the text again to see the changes Eh current settings are only applicable in the open documents. To use changed translation settings for translating other documents or in another PROMT application, you must save them in a new or existing translation profile, and then choose that profile in the desired application Linguistic parameters for translation profiles and current translation settings can be edited using the ‘Translation Profiles and Translation Settings dialogs, respectively. The steps for either of these actions are identical and are described in 64. “Editing Linguistic Settings” on page 87. These dialogs contain the following tabs + Dictionaries—creatinga list of PROMT dictionaries used for translations, + Reserved Words—creating and editing a list of words (phrases) that do not require a translation; + Preprocessors—enabling special features for preliminary processing of the source text, + Translation Rules—using special rules for translating specific linguistic structures (phrases); + TM—creatinga list of TM (Translation Memory) databases used for translation, and changing a number of settings of TM databases, + Additional Settings—using additional Linguistic settings. Ei tabs in which settings have been made are marked with an “*” (asterisk). 6.4.1. Enabling Dictionaries ‘You can improve the quality of translation by enabling specialized and user dictionaries. Bh organize the dictionaries in the Enabled Dictionaries list in the priority you wish for lookup to occur. The system always searches in the list of dictionaries, beginning with the topmost dictionary, and uses the translation from the dictionary where it was first found. Enable only those dictionaries that have the greatest coverage for the subject matter. Itis best to disable the dictionaries that do not correspond to the subject matter. The General dictionary for each language pair is always enabled, but is not displayed in the list. It has the lowest priority and is the last dictionary in which the system searches for translations. Creating a List of Reserved Words Reserved Word A reserved word is a word or phrase in the source text that is marked as not requiring a translation, for example, proper names, abbreviations, or special proper names that comprise ordinary words (Windows XP, Miami Beach) ‘These words or phrases can be displayed in the translation using their original spelling, or they can be transliterated (only if Russian is the source or target language). 886.4.2. Creating a List of Reserved Words DB 1o create a list of words or phrases that do not require a translation, choose the Add command from the shortcut menu in the Reserved Words tab (press the INS key). Setting Up Preprocessors Preprocessor ‘A set of instructions to exclude specific pattems from translation or to transform them according to the nules of the target language. Without preprocessing instructions, these pattems may be incorrectly interpreted by the translation engine, resulting in a mistranslation. ‘The Preprocessors tab lists the preprocessors used in PROMT translator: The Standard preprocessor excludes the following data from a translation + email addresses (for example, John Smith@avid com), + URLs (uniform resource locators) (hitp:/Awmwapple. com), + names of files and folders (C:\Windows\System32\Append exe), + date and time, + phrases that do not require transiation, + beginnings of paragraphs The Sinileys preprocessor excludes smileys (or emoticons) from transtation. Setting Up Segmentation Rules for Translation Memory Databases ‘Text Segment ‘A segment of text in a document extracted in accordance with segmentation rules and treated asa single unit in translation A segmentation rule defines the boundary of. text segment. It can be determined by a simple or regular expression that defines what is a segment boundary (a rule) and what is not (an exception). A regular expression defines a template, which a string of characters must match ina search. The system comes with a number of predesigned segmentation niles (which differ for each language). Entering Governing Information After you enter the basic grammar information and translation, you can enter goveming information for the headword, i. information about its usage wath a noun (with or without a preposition), infinitive verbs, and subordinate clauses, as well as information about variants for translating such grammatical structures You can specify several prepositions that are governed by the headword, along with miscellaneous governing information for transitive, intransitive, and reflexive verbs. Editing Translation Memory Databases Translation Memory —_A database that stores translation units which consist of source segment (TM) Database (typically, a sentence) and its target, translated segment counterpart ‘Translation Memory technology is based on comparing a document that is being translated against a set of data stored in a pre-configured TM database. When the translation engine encounters a section in the text that matches a section in the TM database completely or partially, it uses the existing translation from the database Using Translation Memory is particularly effective when translating documents that contain numerous iterations of similar text: textbooks, scientific articles, manuals, letters, recipes, and so on. Not only does this save time without sacnficing the quality of the translation, it also ensures uniformity of the output text in terms of terminology and style. Data in the TM databases is stored as entries consisting of sections of the source text and their translations. ‘The database also contains additional information: the name of the user who created or edited an entry, as ‘well as the creation and last modification date of an entry.
