Hydraulics & Fluid Mechanics Assignment

This document contains two questions from an assignment on hydraulics and fluid mechanics. Question 1 involves calculating the mean velocity and total discharge of a compound channel given its Manning's coefficient, slope, and dimensions. Question 2 asks students to use Buckingham's Pi theorem to derive an expression for pressure gradient in a circular pipeline as a function of relevant non-dimensional groups involving properties like density, viscosity, diameter, velocity, and length.

Question 1

(10 marks)

A compound channel is shown below with side slopes symmetrical on the other sides of
the channel. If the mannings coefficient n for the compound channel is 0.035 and the slope
of the channel bed is 0.00020 Determine

Question 2

(10 marks)

Obtain an expression for the pressure gradient p in a circular pipeline of diameter D,

length L, conveying an incompressible fluid of density p, dynamic viscosity at the mean
velocity V, as a function of non-dimensional groups. Use Buckingham Theorem.
Repeating variables are p, V and D.
