Power Recovery in Thermal Transformers

The document outlines a project team and proposal to generate usable power from waste heat produced inside high-rating power transformers. The team, consisting of 4 members, aims to recover some of the large amounts of power lost during electricity transmission and distribution by transformers. Their proposal is to use the heat generated in transformer oils to heat a secondary liquid into steam, which can then power a mini steam turbine and generate electricity, converting around 80% of total losses into usable energy in the form of heat and power. The project will be simulated using LABView software from National Instruments.

Transformer Thermal Power Plant

Abstract
The main aim objective of this project is to generate usable power from heat wasted
generated inside high rating power transformers of larger ratings. With increase in demand for
high power, generation of power also increases thereby increasing the rating of the electrical
equipments used for generation, transmission and distribution. Power demand is getting higher
and higher daily. During the transmission and distribution of power, transformers form an
integrable part of the power system. From generated power, huge large amount of power get
lossed is lost in Ttransmission and Ddistribution. This project deals with recovering some
amount of power which is being lossed lost inside the transformer. Due to huge amount of when
large current flowings through the windings, it is necessary to reduce the heat generated either by
following a gets heated and that heat is cooled by convection method and or by using external
fans. Generally in very large transformers, transformers are cooled using transformer oils. When
the heat generated by transformer oils are used to heat a secondary liquid that converts to steam
at the heating temperature, the converted steam can be used in power generature by use of mini
steam turbine. Other than losses electricity is used by fans to reduce the heat. That heat can be
utilized to generate electricity. By this process, We can be able to generate around 80% of total
losses can be converted to useable energy in the form of heat and electricity. This project is
simulated in using LABView from National Instruments.
