PACE Program
The People with Arthritis
Can Exercise Program
By: Kristen Logel & Lisa Markey
What is it?
Program created for people with arthritis with
the overall goal to maintain joint flexibility,
muscle strength, and reduce pain and
stiffness of joints
Includes a one hour low-impact classes
featuring range-of-motion exercises which
can be taken while standing or sitting;
routines can also be mimicked at home
Who developed the
program?
Created by The Arthritis Foundation, head
researchers of arthritis in the US
Individuals who attended sessions for 4 months
showed a 24% reduction in pain and
demonstrated confidence in their ability to
continue activities by 22%
Exercises were developed by physical therapists
to help with the pain, fatigue and a decrease in
strength
What was done?
346 people with arthritis participated in the
study, all of which demonstrated some limitations
in their daily activities due to arthritis
Participants were then separated into an
intervention and a control group
The exercise program consisted of twice-weekly,
one-hour sessions for eight weeks
How was it measured?
All participants completed assessments at baseline and at
the end of the Program.
After the eight-week assessment, the control group received
the intervention.
Pain, stiffness and fatigue were measured using visual
scales. Physical function was assessed with self-report and
performance measures.
Physical activity was scored according to type of activity,
frequency and duration. Self-efficacy, depression and
helplessness were assessed using various questionnaires.
What was the conclusion?
Participants who attended at least 9 of the 16
classes showed improvement in pain, fatigue and
stiffness, in some arm and leg strength and in selfconfidence that they could manage their arthritis
Six months after completing the Program, pain and
fatigue were still improved, however there was a
decline in self-efficacy
Participants that continued exercising at home
maintained improvement in all symptoms
