Projectile Lab: Displacement vs. Angle
Purpose: The purpose of this investigation was to mathematically and graphically
find the relationship between displacement and angle. My prediction is that as we
increase angle we will decrease displacement.
Independent Variable: Angle - The angle used in the lab is manually changed
in order to see the effect it will have on displacement.
Dependent Variable: Displacement - The total displacement is dependent on
the angle used for each trail.
Apparatus:
Materials
Diagra
m
Projectile launcher
Meter sticks
Notebook
Ball
Procedure:
1. Load the projectile launcher with the yellow ball and push it downwards
with the plunger until two separate clicks are heard. Set the angle on the
launcher to 25.
2. Pull the string connected to the launcher upwards and observe the
location it lands.
3. Once the landing position is found, use the meter sticks to calculate the
total displacement, starting from the exit of the launcher all the way to
where it lands and record the figure down. // only if calculating angle and
time, proceed with the remaining steps.
4. Have a partner stand with a notebook chest level in the location the ball
lands in order to ensure an accurate timing each trial and to prevent the
ball from reaching the floor.
5. Repeat step 4 for three separate trials. Once completed, repeat steps 2-4,
increasing the angle by 10each set of trails.
Constants: The ball, the launcher, the direction the projectile was fired,
the level at which the notebook was held.
Conclusion:
Complementary Angles: Two angles that add up to 90 degrees (a Right
Angle). Ex: 40 and 50, 80 and 10.
As the angle increases, the displacement rapidly increases until it reaches the
maximum distance it can travel until it begins to gradually decrease at an
increasing rate.
According to the data recorded, the angle that produces the largest and smallest
horizontal displacement is as follows:
Largest (55 / 65) These two data points on the graph have the highest
displacement because its after this point that the displacement decreases at
an increasing rate.
Smallest (25) Given more trials, its safe to infer that angles < 75 would
result in a displacement similar to 25 (151 cm).

As the angle increases, the time increases at a constant rate; a direct relationship.
I did not personally record time data as I figured only the other
partners were responsible for it.
