Riverside Police Department Awarded Justice Assistance (JAG) Grant for


Summer Bike Patrol and Related Equipment
The Riverside Police Department has been awarded funding from the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice
Assistance Grant (JAG) program from the United States Department of Justice.

The Riverside Police Department (RPD) was awarded $20,738.00 from a summer bike patrol grant which
will be released through the Cook County Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
RPD received the full award and no matching funds are required from the Village. This was a competitive
grant application with over 45 applications being considered in Cook County alone.
Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel stated, The goal of the Riverside Police Department's bike patrol
unit and the bike patrol summer detail is to enhance the police department's efforts in the area of
community relations and crime prevention. Having our officers on bicycles is a great way to encourage
interaction between police officers and the residents of Riverside. The intent of this program is to enhance
the perception of the police department as well as our relationship with our citizens by creating more
positive interaction between police officers and citizens.
Officers will also be assigned to night time residential patrol in effort to reduce property crime.
The grant will allow, amongst other things, the police department to purchase four specially outfitted
mountain bikes for police patrol, associated equipment for the bikes, and striping of the bikes for police
patrol. Overtime for the officers working the detail will be completely paid for by the grant.

The Byrne grant program, administered by Department of Justices Bureau of Justice Assistance, allows states and local governments to support
a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime and improve the criminal justice system. Byrne grant funds can be used for state and
local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice
for any one or more of the following purpose areas: law enforcement programs; prosecution and court programs; prevention and education
programs; corrections and community corrections programs; drug treatment programs; and planning, evaluation, and technology improvement
programs.
