PREFACE
COURSE NAME: Master Driver Trainer Program
PURPOSE: To provide a program of instruction that will standardize driver training by
providing Master Driver Trainers (MDT) with the knowledge and resources necessary to
establish and maintain a Driver’s Training program and/or “BN Driver’s Training
Academy” for the Battalion Commander.
OBJECTIVE: To use the regulatory guidance, references, required documentation, sample
training products and administrative documents, duties and responsibilities, provided in
this program to efficiently and effectively train MDTs to create and run professional
driver’s training programs in their respective battalions so that Army motor vehicle
operators (drivers) will be thoroughly trained and fully qualified to safely drive military
vehicles.
NOTE: It is highly recommended that you work with copies of AR 600-55 as you go
through this program.
* Some units choose to organize their Driver’s Training into a BN Driver’s Tng Academy.

PREREQUISITES: Commissioned Officers, Warrant Officers,
Noncommissioned Officers (E-7 or above) or civilian equivalents
appointed as Master Driver Trainer with the responsibility for establishing
and conducting a Battalion Driver’s Training program and/or “BN
Driver’s Training Academy”.
RECOMMENDED: It is highly recommended that the Master Driver
Trainer has or receives the following skills and knowledge:
• be computer literate
• a working knowledge of ULLS-Ground/SAMS-E
• be familiarized with Hazardous Materials and HAZMAT transportation
• have attended the Total Army Training Course

INTRODUCTION
Purpose: The primary purposes of this program are to:
• Provide Master Driver Trainers with the information/references they need to
develop and maintain a Driver’s Training program for their units.
• Supplement AR 600-55, The Army Driver and Operator Standardization
Program by providing guidance on how to obtain and use lesson plans, written
and hands-on performance tests, and listings of supporting training materials for
Army motor vehicle operators.
• Provide Master Driver Trainers with the tools needed (sample SOP, sample driver
interview, sample driver packet, sample lessons, etc.) to meet the challenge of
producing quality Army motor vehicle operators. Leaders need to emphasize
operator training because high-technology, high-performance vehicles demand
greater operator skills and knowledge. Drivers must know how to operate
equipment effectively in all environments and must be challenged to use safe
driving practices and increase awareness for accident avoidance.

INTRODUCTION
Scope: This program does not replace AR 600-55, AR 385-10 or any of the other
regulatory guidance used for the selecting, training, testing, and licensing of Army
motor vehicle operators. This program provides guidance on how to obtain and
use Army Regulations/ pamphlets/forms, Field Manuals (FMs), Training Support
Packages (TSPs), Training Circulars (TCs), videos, and Computer Based Training
CDs to assist you in developing and maintaining a Driver’s Training program for
your units. In addition, this program provides samples of the type of products you
should be able to produce once you complete the program.
The Army has developed many references for you to use to teach drivers how to
drive various Army motor vehicles. Most Army motor vehicles have a TSP or TC
you can use to teach the vehicle to your operators. Unit commanders have the
flexibility to make minor modifications in these references. Unit constraints on
terrain and resources may limit the extent to which the references may be fully
implemented. However, drivers must pass the tests in the references to be issued
an OF 346 Standard Permit or Limited Permit according to AR 600-55.
