Operational Excellence One Point Lesson

Two Bin System for Visual Control

Category: Visual Control Business: Service Vehicles Lesson: 22 Author: Gary Rascoe

PROBLEM OR OPPORTUNITY
Product used for daily service did not have a visual replenishment level. A service provider may
run out of a necessary product causing rework or lack of adequate service.

BEFORE

AFTER

Product placed in bucket,

level is not visible

Two bin system using clear

containers for easy visibility

COUNTERMEASURE
Create a two bin system using clear containers.
Product level is easily visible.
When one container is emptied, the second container is used. When the service vehicle
returns to base, then the empty container is restocked and the product is rotated to ensure
first in, first out

RESULTS
The visual two bin system helps prevent running short of material to service an account.
It also reduces the amount of time the driver spends on the pre-trip inspection; no need
to open the bucket to check product level and to decide whether more is needed.
