Enhancing Math Skills with PBL

1) The document presents research on implementing problem based learning (PBL) to enhance mathematical analysis and evaluation skills of junior high school students in Bandung, Indonesia. 2) The study was conducted between February and March 2014 with two 8th grade classes, one using PBL and one using conventional teaching methods. 3) The results of the study found that students in the PBL class showed improved mathematical analysis and evaluation skills compared to those in the conventional class, as measured by a pre-test and post-test, according to their initial mathematics skills.

This research implemented based on our expectations in mathematics especially for grade
VIII student. As NCTM says, students on grade VIII should see mathematics as analyzing
pattern, evaluating conjecture, and emphasizing reasoning skills. Another consideration is
the Mathematical Initial Skills (bottom, middle, and top). This research was conducted in
Junior High School Bandung on February and March 2014. The aim of this research is to
identify the enhancement of students mathematical analysis and evaluation skills in
Problem Based Learning class compare with conventional class according to the
Mathematics Initial Skills. The design of this research is Randomized Subjects, PretestPosttest Control Group Design. The population are all grade VIII students and the sample
are two classes on grade VIII in that school. The data analysis use 2-WAY ANOVA. The
result is there were the different of students mathematical analysis and evaluation skills in
Problem Based Learning class and conventional class according to the Mathematics Initial
Skills.
