Engineering Assignment: Stress and Torque Analysis

This document outlines 3 problems for an assignment due on May 13th at 6pm. Problem 1 involves calculating the maximum torque that can be transmitted by a gear without slip given its dimensions and a maximum circumferential stress. Problem 2 asks if a small central hole is permissible for a steel turbine disk rotating at 1500 rpm given the radial rim loading. Problem 3 involves calculating the interface pressure between a rubber hose and metal fitting given the hose properties and dimensions when compressed.

Assignment 2: due 13 of May (Monday) 6 pm

Problem 1: A gear of inner and outer radii 120 and 180 mm, respectively, is shrunk onto a hollow shaft of inner
radius 60 mm. The maximum circumferential (tangential) stress induced in the gear wheel is 1.5 MPa. The length
of the gear wheel parallel to shaft axis is 100 mm.
Assuming a coefficient of static friction of 0.5 at the common surface, what maximum torque may be transmitted
by the gear without slip?

Problem 2: A flat steel turbine disk of 0.75 m outside diameter is to rotate at 1500 rpm. At this speed, turbine
blades and shrouding produce a radial rim loading of 15.0 MPa. If the maximum shear stress is not to
exceed 50 MPa, is small central hole permissible?

Problem 3: The figure below shows a rigid metal fitting attached to the end of a thick-walled rubber hydraulic
hose (the deformations are exaggerated). The seal is formed due to compression of the outer wall of the hose,
which has a modulus of elasticity = 200 MPa and = 0.5. The inner radius of the hose and the mating
diameter of the fitting are both 6 mm. Assuming that there is no axial load on the hose, find the interface
pressure between inner and outer radii of the hose and the metal fitting. From your result, estimate the hydraulic
pressure at which the fitting would start to leak.
