Why We Chose This Topic When we received this years theme, we immediately began
brainstorming leaders of the world that are remembered for their historical significance, both
good and bad. We all were sure on one thing though: we wanted a recent leader. We feel that
Nelson Mandela was a leader for his entire life and was a complex individual. We wanted to
research how his life experiences shaped the man who is made immortal by history.
How We Conducted Our Research Our whole group met together on a weekly basis to discuss
articles, books, speeches, and documentaries related to our topic. In addition to this each of us
conducted individual research and we sought to broaden our understanding of Mandela and his
life. We researched views that both supported and conflicted with some of Mandelas methods of
reaching the end of the South African Apartheid.
How We Developed And Created Our Website During Winter Break, we created our NHD
website. Each of us took responsibility for different aspects of the website. After the break, we
met up to decide on an appropriate timeline in which we would complete our website. We made
sure each of us understood how to navigate Weebly and we found communication to be vital in
this process.
How Our Project Relates To The Theme A leader could be anyone, activist or dictator, who
convinces a large group of people that their cause is worth changing the world for. Nelson
Mandela fits this definition perfectly; he gained the respect of millions and achieved his goals all
while demonstrating leadership qualities.
