Understanding QAM and Its BER Performance

QAM is a modulation technique that combines two AM signals into one channel, doubling bandwidth. Higher order QAM constellations can transfer more bits per symbol but at the cost of higher error rates, because points must be closer together, making them more susceptible to noise. QAM has a higher bit error rate than PSK due to its congested constellation points, and rectangular QAM constellations have better error performance than circular constellations.

QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) is a method of combining two amplitude-modulated (AM) signals
into a single channel, thereby doubling the effective bandwidth.
Considering higher order constellation, QAM can fecilitate to transfer more bits per symbol but at higher bit
error rate.
This is because if the mean energy of the constellation is to remain the same, the points must be closer
together and are thus more susceptible to noise and other corruption.
The interference caused by noise was observed to much greater than that in PSK due to the congested
constellation points. Due to the congested constellation, BER of QAM is greater than the corresponding
PSK. Considering the BER performance rectangular constellation is superior over circular constellations
