Question:
Find the load current IL and the ripple voltage Vr in the circuit given in Figure 1?
Given:
Vs = 115 Vrms
f = 60 Hz
Transformer Turn Ratio = 10 : 1
RL = 2.2 k
C = 50 F
Solution:
We know that Vrms = 0.707 Vp
Vrms = 0.707 Vp
Vp(pri) = 115/0.707
Vp(pri) = 162.66 V
Vp(sec) = Vp(pri) /(N 1/N 2)
Vp(sec) = 162.66/10
Vp(sec) = 16.27 V
Using the second approximation for bridge rectifier Vp(out) = Vp(in) 1.4 V
Vp = 14.87 V
Now calculating IL which is equal to IL = VL /RL
IL = 6.75 mA
Now we know that for a bridge rectifier Vdc = 2Vp /
Vdc = 9.47 V
For here we can calculate VR = IL /f C
VR = 6.75x103 /(120 50x106 )
VR = 1.12 V

Question:
Find the value of the Capacitor if the ripple voltage Vr = 1V in the circuit given
in Figure 2?
Given:
Vs = 220 Vrms
f = 60 Hz
Transformer Turn Ratio = 5 : 1
RL = 5 k
Vr = 1 V
Solution:
We know that Vrms = 0.707 Vp
Vrms = 0.707 Vp
Vp(pri) = 220/0.707
Vp(pri) = 311.17 V
3
Vp(sec) = Vp(pri) /(N 1/N 2)
Vp(sec) = 311.17/5
Vp(sec) = 62.23 V
Using the second approximation for bridge rectifier Vp(out) = Vp(in) 0.7 V
Vp = 61.53 V
Now calculating IL which is equal to IL = VL /RL
IL = 12.31 mA
For here we can calculate VR = IL /f C
C = 12.31x103 /(120 1)
C = 102.58 F
