Truss Analysis and Centroid Calculation Guide

This document defines structural analysis terms like truss, joint, member, stress types, and centroids. It then provides two sample problems - one to find member stresses in a truss and one to locate the centroid of a trapezoid. The instructor notes that the quiz will cover the definitions, the truss problem, and centroid problem. Students are advised to practice these examples and submit their group reports.

Define/Enumerate the following items:

Truss / joint / member /two-force member / tensile stress / compressive stress / direct or axial stress
Centroids of areas / center of gravity / moment of an area / centroidal axis / centroids of simple
geometric areas( rectangle, triangle, semicircle and quarter circle)/ formula of simple geometric areas

Problem Solving
1. Find the stress in all members of truss below

(d) joint F

6 AB sin 30 = 0

AB = 12 N compression

AF 12 cos 30 = 0

AF = 10.39 N tension

At Joint B: Fy = 0
Fx = 0
At Joint F : Fv = 0
Fh = 0

BF 4cos 30 = 0

BF = 3.46 N compression

12 BC 4sin 30 = 0

BC = 10 N compression

FC sin 60 - 3.46 sin 60 = 0

FC = 3.46 N tension

FG 10.39 + 3.46 cos 60 + 3.46 cos60 = 0

FG = 6.93N tension

In this problem the truss and the loads are symmetrical, it is sufficient to consider only half of the truss.
For non- symmetrical trusses and loads, all joints must be computed.

2. Locate the centroid (X and y coordinates) of the trapezoid

(a)

Solution:
A1 = A3 = b h = (3)( 6) = 9m
A2 = b h = 6 x 6 = 36 m
Total area = A1 + A2 + A3 = 9 + 36 + 9 = 54m
Since the left side is symmetrical with the right side X = 0 and using figure (b)
My = 2 x 9 + 3 x 36 + 2x9 = 144m
Y = My/A

A3

= 144 / 54 = 2.67 m above the base

Therefore the centroid coordinates are (X and Y) = (0 and 2.67 m)

Our quiz will cover 4 (definitions/enumerations) and 1 problem for truss and 1 problem for centroid
coordinates. Practice these problems because your quiz will be similar to these 2 examples. Good luck
on Tuesday September 30. Also kindly prepare the reports of the two groups (III and IV) and furnish me
with the printed copy or send them to me to this e-mail add
