Stages of Group Development Explained

Group development occurs in stages as the group forms and works towards goals. The stages are: forming, where group members meet and get to know each other; storming, where conflicts can arise as strategies are discussed; norming, where relationships strengthen and group norms are established; performing, where the group works effectively towards goals using established norms; and adjourning, where temporary groups disband after completing their tasks.

MEANING
o Group development means the birth of
group.

o Like anything group is also evolved by passing


through various stages.
Stages of group development
o Forming

o Storming

o Norming

o Performing

o Adjourning
FORMING STAGE
o People meet each other.

o Accept each other.

o Share information.

o People begin to think themselves as a part


of group.
STORMING STAGE
o People start arguing.

o Conflict arises.

o Some people experience tensions and may


leave.

o And some form strategies to achieve goals.


NORMING STAGE
o Close relationship and cohesiveness.

o Strong group identity.

o Group forms some common set of expectations i.e. group norms


are build.
PERFORMING STAGE
o On the basis of norms formed in previous step
they start functioning.

o People start achieving goals for the purpose


they were clubbed together.

o For permanent work groups performing is the


final stage.
ADJOURNING STAGE
o This stage is for temporary work groups
which dissolve after the completion of the
task.

o Relationships comes to an end.
