Fatigue Strength Calculation Guide

The document is a tutorial solution that calculates the endurance limit and fatigue strength of a mechanical component. It provides the given values of diameter, ultimate tensile strength, number of cycles, and reliability. It then calculates the endurance limit to be 206.42 MPa using a factor equation. The fatigue strength is then determined to be 315.37 MPa using another equation involving the endurance limit, ultimate tensile strength, and number of cycles.

SOLUTION

Q3

Given: d = 30 mm, Sut = 770 MPa, N = 75000 cycles, Reliability = 99%

Q4

Calculate the endurance limit and fatigue strength.

Se = 0.5Sut
= 0.5 x 770 MPa
= 385 MPa
For machined component,
a = 4.51
b = -0.265
ka = (4.51)(770)-0.265
= 0.7749
For axial loading, kb = 1
For loading factor (axial loading), kc = 0.85
Temperature factor, kd = 1
Reliability factor (99%), ke = 0.814
Therefore, endurance limit Se = (0.7749)(1)(0.85)(1)(0.814)(385)
= 206.42 MPa

Fatigue strength, Sf = aNb
